If GO were to extend service west of Hamilton...

I was thinking of this earlier. What route would GO take if they were to extend train service West of Hamilton? As it is now, trains serve Hamilton at rush hour on the CP Hamilton Sub into downtown Hamilton. How would trains get West to Niagara Falls and communities along the way? (Grimsby, St. Catharines, etc.)

Would they need to re-locate the Hamilton GO train service back to the James Street station (LIUNA station)? Is there a way trains can continue on the CP Hamilton Sub to Niagara Falls? I believe this sub does actually run to Niagara Falls to get to the USA, but I'm not sure.

Obviously GO is going to need to concentrate on getting more trains into Hamilton before extending West, but its fun to think about anyway.

I've thought about this a lot as well because it would be very convenient for lots of people. It would also make more sense to move back onto the old line because its a CN line instead of CP that’s it now uses to get into Hamilton. But I don't think it will happen because GO invested money into having the Hunter street tunnel lowered so the GO line could press forward into the downtown core. That line now does go into New York I believe so it wouldn't be any use. I would love to see GO expand into the fruit belt but right now I don't know if it’s feasible.

I was reading somewhere if they extend service west to Niagara Falls, it would have to come out of the Burlington Station because that as I understand is much easier to connect to the CN line that goes to Niagara Falls that Amtrak and VIA use.

So, I guess rush hour trains to Hamilton would continue using CP Hamilton Sub while the Niagara bound trains continue on the Grimsby Sub. Interesting. I don't think any other part of the GO system would be like that, having a little stub line like that.

It won't happen anytime soon. The next major project the government was even slightly entertaining was stretching service to Peterborough, starting first with bus routes and soon thereafter following with train service. That is just as unlikely, but I'd have to say that it holds a better chance seeing as areas down there are flourishing with their own municipal transit systems. I just don't see an overall need for it in that area.
