XP or 2000?

It'll run fine on that machine. I don't think an emulator would work nicely with games.

Seconded. There is a util in the Free Software thread that will let you take out the useless parts of the OS, but both will run fine. I've seen XP on a 266 and used it for 4 years on a 333 with 64mb ram.

XP will work fine if you turn off all the fancy bloated themes (run it in performance mode from the system settings thing) and turn off un-needed services.

start>run>services.msc

I find that one better to use. Not sure if its the same thing or not, I've just been taught to use that one instead.

Yours seems a little better but both seem to do the same thing (disabling).

XP ran fine on my old Athlon 550 with 256 megs of ram without disabling anything. Sadly, except for the ram, I could probably still run that machine as my main machine if I really wanted to.

At my dads I run XP Professional with all serveices activated on a PII 450 with 256mb and on a PIII 600 also with 256mb and both machines run very smoothly. I installed XP something like over 2 and a half years ago on one machine (the 450) and it's still very fast and stable. My sister's box was a P233 with 256mb and it also ran XP Pro for a while, but I gave her my 3200+ when I upgraded to a 3500+ 64. She burnt cds with it, downloaded music, used MSN and did powerpoint projects for school with it. Now I use that box as a test box running 2003 Server, and it too is running great.

XP can run on an older machine without a hick.

I was just thinking of using IBM OS/2 Warp 4.5 2000 Release. Display doctor 7.07 for use with a ATI AIW and ATI Radeon 7000. Opera browser, and a windows emulator. Although im worried if it wont support the aforementioned programs.
