Prince Albert blaze set deliberately, says Scugog fire chief
Old Simcoe Road fire in demolished house was arson: Richard Miller
Jan 26, 2006
PRINCE ALBERT -- A fire that engulfed the remains of a demolished home on Old Simcoe Road almost two weeks ago was deliberately started, says Scugog's top fire official.
According to Richard Miller, the Township's fire chief, the blaze that began in the early morning hours of Jan. 15, just south of Prince Albert Public School, was not accidental.
"It was definitely arson," the fire chief told Township officials at Monday afternoon's council meeting. "By who? I can't tell you that."
Chief Miller noted that the demolished home had been "sitting there for months on end" and added that he planned on talking to Gene Chartier, the Township's commissioner of infrastructure and development, about getting demolition sites cleaned up quickly.
"I'm going to speak to (Mr. Chartier) about tightening up demolitions, I'd like to see them (cleaned up) in days," said the chief.
Fire officials estimate the blaze began around 2 a.m. on Jan. 15. Fire crews were alerted around 4 a.m.
"There was such heat and intensity, we were there for a number of hours," said Chief Miller.
Firefighters were still on hand the following Monday morning soaking down the remains of the house to ensure no embers could smoulder and catch into a fire again later.
There are currently no leads on who is responsible for the fire, added Chief Miller.
