Kind of hard to explain to be honest. They started out as pure black/death metal. Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree produced a few albums and they started to be called prog-death. LOL. Basically, they are all amazing musicians. But if you into more classic rock w/ clean vocals - you'd probably hate it.

I've only heard one of their albums, Blackwater Park, which I like, especially the song "Harvest".

Harvest is an all time favourite..and one of the songs that got me really into them. Every album is good though really if you like that kind of music.

Are the vocals unintelligible grunting? I freakin' hate that! I once heard a band that sounded almost like Iron Maiden, which is my favorite band, but then the "vocalist" just started grunting and it ruined the whole thing.

The singer does both clean and death vocals...and yea, you pretty much cant understand what he's saying during the death vocals unless you know the lyrics. It took me a LONG time to be able to listen to it. But they are all such amazing musicians it grew on me. And his clean vocals are fantastic...

(and I also adore Maiden...)

I know and like Opeth. They just came to Winnipeg, but I waited too long to get my procrastinating ass over to ticketmaster to buy myself a ticket, and they sold out. I'd say my favourite song of theirs is "to bid you farewell".
