Entry: Tailings
originally posted by jB

The refuse of mining operations. Typically collected in large reservoirs, pools, or heaps via pipes or sometimes trucked in (depending on the mining operation). Some tailings may be hazardous such as those from uranium mining operations.

Tailings may be indicated by a sudden change in the surrounding environment such as stagnant pools in the middle of a forest, a sudden drop into a basin-like reservoir in relatively stable geographic areas, or the presence of foreign materials (worked stones, liquids) in a particular area.

The presence of tailings typically indicates a mining site nearby.
