Some tailings may be hazardous such as those from uranium mining operations. Tailings may be indicated by a sudden change in the surrounding environment such as stagnant pools in the middle of a forest, a sudden drop into a basin-like reservoir in relatively stable geographic areas, or the presence of foreign materials (worked stones, liquids) in a particular area. The presence of tailings typically indicates a mining site nearby.
