Affordable Inkjets, Part 2
entry by Avatar-X

So, some time ago I wrote about my affordable inkjet system.

A lot has happened since then, with regards to my printing setup.

After getting fed up with having to constantly run cleaning cycles and having the printer ink dry up, I decided I would find a way to fix the problem. I visited my local "surplus" store -- not army surplus, but electronics and gadgetry. There, I found several types of "filters". I think they are used in hospitals. They are round, with a flat plate in the middle, and a nozzle on the top and bottom. I'll post some pictures soon.

Inside the filter is a material that allows air to pass through, but requires pressure to do so. So, I bought a whole bunch of these (25c each) and stuck them into the air holes of my ink system.

They work like a dream come true. Now, I can print anytime I want, without having to prime the printer or print junk pages or waste ink on cleaning operations. In fact, they work so well, that I would even recommend my solution to people who don't print all that often but just want to save on ink costs.

I also decided to get a new printer. I managed to pick up a Canon PiXMA IP5000 for $135 refurbished. This is visually identical (except black) to my older IP3000, but with two major differences:

- Double the resolution
- Prints with 5 inks instead of 4.

So, I needed to get a new ink kit to work with this printer. Once again I bought it from www.echostore.com for the bargain price of $62 US, plus a few more bucks to fill it with ink. Again, it arrived mere days later. I love Canada Post. I installed it and did my same trick again with the Surplus Filters. I've had it a month now, and it's been working great.

My older printer, the IP3000, I sold to my mother, ink kit and all. I reassembled it at her place, and installed the ink kit again, including the filters. Now, she can print without paying ridiculous prices for ink.

Those filters -- they're totally awesome. They made this ink kit thing WORK!

I'll post some pictures later.
