It's been long enough, I guess we can throw some American Class I's in there too. (UP/BNSF/NS/CSX). Of the American ones, I've always prefered BNSF's paint schemes and varied motive power. It's nice catching an old warbonnet ATSF unit, even more so if you see it up north of the border.

CP, there is just something to them that CN will never have.

I really like the CP Holiday Train but I prefer the older rolling stock that CN uses, and their line that goes through the Old Port of Montreal.

I love watching small switching jobs on both CN and CP, CN around here uses remote control GP9's with a slug and 2 man crews, CP will have a lashup of 3 GP38s and a 4 man crew, no remote. with the 4 man crews i find the switching jobs tend to be a bit more interesting.

CPR all the way!

CN is made up of a bunch of failed companies that the Canadian government took over in order to save, then privatized as one company later on. CP has been solid since day one.
Not to mention they connected the country which brought BC into the confederation; and well the scandal from it all ended up bring down John A MacDonald.

So with such a rich history and well some of the best scenery by far, I can only see Canadian Pacific earning any sort of respect.

Besides with pictures like this what's not to like

OH and they of course also hat the first transcontinental train

What a great question! There is a rivalry shaped in the minds of young boys that watch trains! I happen to prefer CP for some reason. I guess it's because I grew up in Port Moody (original western terminus) and would see CP rolling stock every day. I was also a big fan of the old, palatial CP Hotels, the Banff Springs Hotel being my favorite. I even preferred the CP Police cars for some reason.
Looking back its pretty silly, but as a kid I imagined venomous hatred between employees of each company.
