The idea of Lent was really not supposed to be negative reinforcement.
It's certainly not a silly idea, but it is very misunderstood even by churches and religious groups.
This should be a positive and enriching experience, not merely an exercise in self denial - especially denial of trivial things.
Does giving up candy make you a better person if you can still eat granola bars and suck down sodas?
Does giving up meat on Friday do much if you can feast on a veggie burrito @ Chipotle or a big juicy salmon steak?
Try doing something positive or self-improving and not denying yourself something useless.

My coworker gave up punching me for Lent.
