The fine folks at A&P (grocery chain) recently began demoing/rebuilding the store in the Bowmanville Mall (Mearns & Hwy 2). This new A&P will be a super A&P, which is hoped will rip Loblaws a new a$$hole. The nearby IGA, still in 1970s decor and mindset, will be hard pressed to compete. As a result of the new "super" 24/7 A&P in the Bowmanville Mall, the nearby second A&P at Liberty Street (also 24/7) will be shut down and demoed. A&P refused to sell the land to a store that could potentially compete with them so they accepted a deal to sell to the Bowmanville Hospital, which will expand north to fill the A&P lands at Liberty & Hwy 2. If anyone is interested in UE-ing a soon-to-be demoed grocery store, this could be your opportunity shortly (like probably the Fall).

This sucks. Now I have to walk further to go to A&P. Grrr. Not much super about that.

I say the hospital should use the existing grocery store. Paging Dr. Milk. Code Blue, blue, blue light special on yams. Ha.

I'm just glad that the land will be going to good use. I prefer Bowmanville Hospital over any in this area, aside from Cobourg.

I'm sure that the new section of the hospital would be interesting to see too.

the hospital deal makes sense but i have been told by someone who works at A&P that they may also open a Food Basic store at that location. I believe the Food Basics is owned by A&P. Again i am only reporting what i was told even though i feel the Hospital idea Fedge mentioned seems more realistic

Of course, I think its funny that there used to be Loblaws here in New York State

My A&P informant now tells me the new "super" A&P being built in the Bowmanville Mall will open May 17, at which time the old A&P at Liberty Street will be closed down and demolished. The Petro-Can at the NE corner of the "old" A&P lot hasn't renewed its lease and it too will be demoed. That whole lot will become an extended parking lot for the hospital, which will please nurses as well as patients who have previously complained of too few parking spots...

I use to work at the IGA beside the new super store, it was horrible lol. As for exploreing, better do it quick, A&P rebuilds quickly

I go there still, they call it Bowmanville FoodLand now. Still looks straight outta the 70s. Food's fresh though.
