I have 3 HDD's and use them in this order:

(C: )SYSTEM: contains system and applications only(12GB )
(D: )STORAGE: stores media of all types.(120GB )
(E: )BACKUP:installers & important/reusable stuff from both of the other drives(10GB )

Recently I was trying to install Daemon tools and I got to the part where I reboot to finalize the installation and when I boot back up nothing happened. Okay whatever I got over it. I start noticing a few things mess up. I poke around and my D drive is not called storage anymore, it is now just 'Local Disk'. I am then prompted to format the drive! Kay so I lost a lot of music and video and pictures. Maybe I needed a fresh start?. 2 days later, AGAIN.

So I open up my case and look at the HDD connecters to that drive. The jumper that labels the drive as master or slave is missing. I noticed that drive was much hotter than the others.

Did the botched Daemon install do this or was it the missing jumper? or was it both? it sucks to lose all my shit every couple of days

The daemon install probably required the jumper to be in place and the lack of the jumper probably messed things up. Daemon is no ordinary program, it basically tells the OS what to do and if it does not have correct data on all of your hardware, it can cause the OS to malfunction.

I'll reinstall windoze and see what happens. Thanks for the advice

Ok, my guess it it's only a coincidence that this happened while you were installing daemon tools. My guess is that you have a bad drive, however some drives do run hot. If possible get better cooling for it.

While daemon tools does install a virtual cdrom driver, it has no effect on your hard drives and doesn't care about hardware jumpers. As long as your "C" drive is ok and windows is working it will be fine.

The missing jumper could be a problem, but not likely as it was working before. For some drives either the master or slave setting is simply no jumper at all. IE, master = jumper on, slave = no jumper or vice versa. Post your drive model and I can check for you.

I would download the diagnostic program from the driver manufacturer's website and do a full scan on the drive. If it's failing that should tell you for sure.

According to the diagram on the drive there is a jumper required for slave and I have provided it. It still loses its format tho .

Its a maxtor something or other. I'm not gonna be opening my case untill the weekend soo i'll check then and see what tools are available
