What OS version? If you load the OS, WPA is already "loaded", and is asking you to activate. Some newer versions of XP Pro will give a couple of boots before it locks you out of desktop. Not 30, or 60 days. http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.php

Your trying to do updates from the MS site? I have it, and want it gone, but a reload may be the only way. bastards.

It was previously possible to disable it in the add-ons section of IE, but now they've changed it. If anyone finds a fix, let me know.

Your have to activate XP, but you don't have to load GA. However you will then have to use 3rd party source MS updates, and patches.

I looked at that site, but what their doing may cause problems. It's easier to reload, and not do updates from MS. Load them on a CD, never like exposing an OS until it's fully configured, even to go to MS!

I just upgraded my main box to 2x 400GB HDDs in RAID 1. But now I cannot get past the WGA thing. None of the Windows Product Activation cracks I have tried make that Windows Genuine Advantage bullshit think I have a real install, and none of my (3 legit copies) serial keys work anymore due "overuse." I call up microsoft and they won't issue me a new one because they claim I have installed it on several different computers, when in fact, it's only been a few different hard-drives cycled through a main computer when I upgrade. When will microsoft learn that a small percentage of their users actually know how to build a computer? Help?

It's a legal "OEM" retail copy tied to hardware you bought with it?

Erm, no. I bought it (all three actually) separate in the shiny blue folder.

That's what I mean by "legal". That copy is tied to the machine it's loaded on, and all you did was change HDs? Call MS and tell you want your case escalated, I forget the hierarchy , but don't let them go. You got the receipt? Wave in there faces. Right now they can't even see those HDs because they're "hidden" behind the raid controller. They can see your CPU serial #, your RAM installed, CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, and Lan card/chip serial#. Your not violating the EULA, read it, it's real wishy-washy when describing HDs, and the OS. That's deliberate, use it to your advantage if they give you a hard time.

The HDs are merely a subcomponent, and not the most expensive of that system. The old one died and had to be replaced, you upgraded to raid for better data, blah, blah, blah...start getting politely indignant, and dig-in until they cave-in. They will. If it gets bad speak for US manager, the doties are shitheads.

They know not to toy with me. hee-hee.

Full retail price for US customers; you could buy cheaper on the web. Sinister Crayon doesn't need that though. Even with a paid legal copy MS can, and will be assholes. I know, I've played with them more than once.

I think he means through MS; they'll only sell retail copies, not OEM unless it's to replace an existing legal copy, in which case $30 in the US. I've played this game with them. Even the folks at MS can't keep track of their hair brain rules.

most resellers and builders will sell you an oem copy with a new hard disk or mobo. frosty sells them with power cords, they are full versions sold with a users guide and envelope for the cd labeled for sale only with a new PC. just checked my sources and in quebec city informatique mercier will probably sell you an oem copy.

Exactly, but MS will not unless it's to replaced a damaged/defective copy. Not in the US.
