I'm just starting to get a bit of an interest in telephone systems

My first question. Is phreaking dead, due to the digitization of telephone networks? I cant seem to find an informed/current answer to that on any sites, since everything seems to be old from the 80's.

second question. How do I go about locating DATU? is it xxx-9935 here in canada like it is in the states?

Back in the day it was 997-9106, but that hasn't worked in awhile. www.hackcanada.com is a pretty decent site. unfortunatly, the blue box and such are a thing of the past.

I did rig my self up a biege box already.

I also made a payphone take a inbound call, semi. It wont ring, but if someone picks up, you can have a convo on it.

Phreaking is far from dead. No the payphone probably wont ring, but if someone picks up at the right time it should connect you.

Maybe I should clear this up a bit. I'm positive they dont ring because it wears the internal parts/components of the phone. The phone should respond once (Caller should hear 1 ring through the handset of the calling phone, then it should redirect you to the payphone being called internal modem. Im just getting into phreaking so I dont know a lot yet.

They aren't deactivated, rather the phones are programmed for incoming calls only. Only the operator and a PSAP can make them ring, unless you are lucky enough to find one that has not been programmed as such.

I would not necessarily say phreaking is dead; yet, it is slowly fading off. Many telecom co's are changing to VOIP systems, which may open a whole new realm of freaking. Check out http://www.binrev.com or http://oldskoolphreak.com/ .

So wait, with freaking you could get free phone calls through, right? Hmmm. I must look into this further, unfortunately it looks like it's dead now since June 15th. Maybe we can find a way to do it through the modern tech. Obviously not using the 2600 Hertz method, but maybe using a computer to run a VOIP type tunnel through the system (like hacking skype) and then have it pop out randomly in the closest server to the phone you are calling.... hmm.

EDIT: Kinda like Tor... It wouldn't need to be ultra fast considering a phone call doesn't take up much bandwidth either.

just stumbled across this board. Just so you phreakers know. Most people never bother to change the config passwords on thier nortel systems. Lots of fun can be had at any big box store with a MICS or CICS in the back. Not anything sinister but changing the internal caller id names is good for a few hours fun.

No not at all. Most Milennium phones are on what's called ACTS - Automatic Coin Toll System. They aren't beige-able, as the line isn't analog, it's an ISDN line.

but a lot of cocots phones are pots. also those no name ATMs we see everywhere often use just a plain dial up system

damn, I had heard this in a .txt from the states. Could be a US thing, but it looked like it cause they do go huge trouble to make sure the twisted pair is unreachable, which made me think they did so to prevent beieging.

I'l focus on the COCOTs then.

milleniums in the states are somtimes set up cocots , those use a pots line sometimes. where i used to work they had 5 milleniums that were cocots but they were digital through a nortel CICS telephone system (yes a millenium can act like a meridian digital telephone) and then the CICS linked the whole setup to a T1

If I remember right....the few Millenium phones that are in 7-11 stores near me are setup like you described.
