Has anyone seen that fancy looking doghouse on Hwy 2 just after passing eastward from the Ajax/Whitby boundary, on the south side? It looks like a luxury doghouse, well-appointed and sitting on a little hill, with always-cut lawn. It obviously isn't a dog house but what the hell is it???

I kno wwhat house you are talking about. I have no idea what it is never realy thought much about it. Talk to the owners of the place behind it.

Isn't it some sort of monument? Maybe I'm thinking of a different thing.

The one I have in mind is a stone house sitting on the south side of Hwy 2. It is no larger than a doll house.

I know what you're talking about.. South side of Highway 2, as you're coming into Whitby. It's a stone house that is pretty much the size of a dollhouse.. I agree... I've always wondered why it's there, too...

Even as I stood right next to the structure and touched it, I was no closer to understanding what the heck its purpose is. Then I cleared away some small trees from a sign that contained a little more info...

I should have read and posted info on this earlier. That whole area was a separate small town. A few homes still remain (the large farmhouses that I think are coloured white), but many have been destroyed after the amalgamation into Ajax and Whitby. The Almond Village was named after the founder, and was a very religious society. Ill try to dig up more in my books on this old village, but I know the developer whom built the 60s bungalows north of the area named the streets after prominent families from the old village days.
