The S.S.O. is a way to relieve over-flow during a storm or high-flow event. S.S.O.s can add interesting achetecture in drains, and if built correctly, give all the intersting sewer archetecture with none of the turdiness. A badly built overflow will turn a good drain into a full-blown sanitary sewer for a bit. Please see C.S.O. for more information.
