I lived there for a while, I can vouch.
They are absolutely adamant that this is a real phenomenon.
It's hard not to laugh when presented with this claim. . . .
Man - I wish I had a photo of some of the warning stickers and placards about this - I will if anyone I know over there has any.

High Levels of Carbon Dioxide

Another suggests that fans use up oxygen and create fatal levels of carbon dioxide in the room.

I think a sealed room without a fan will eventually have high levels of carbon dioxide if someone is breathing in the room. I don't know about a fan speeding this process up, though.

This one is priceless. Obviously a scare tactic.

Yeah, my girlfriends Korean, and i heard her tell me this when we were sleeping in the summer.

i argued and argued that your body temperature cant lower to dangerous levels without you first waking up and being aware of it,
AND how its pretty hard to die of hypothermia when its a warm 30 degrees just outside and the room temperature even with the fan on would be a steady 15 degrees,
AND that if it was true then the box that the fan came in, SHOULD have some sort of warning label about how NOT to keep it on when sleeping in a non-ventalated area...but she wouldnt hear of it, or just shrugged her shoulders and said thats what she believed.

i dont know for sure if its true but untill i try it myself i'll try to keep an open mind, no matter what my logic tells me.

oh well....i'll prove it someday by sleeping with the fan on in my room and close all the doors. at the very least ill get myself a nice headcold.

I sleep with a fan running almost every night. I guess I'm dead and didn't know it.

I slept with a fan once. I met her at a bar and she told me she thought I was great and that she really loved my last movie and that she bought all my albums and then she told me she was horny and would I like to fuck, and I said yes.

So we did. I never called her back.

It took me an entire summer of sleeping with the fan on to convince my wife it won't kill you. When I was young I slept with a fan on whether it was 30 degrees out or -30.

From what I can tell it started as a spiritual thing (fans sap your Qi or something) but then the rationalists started trying to give it more believeable meanings, rather than investigating whether it's real.

A few months ago, a group of Korean men entered into a suicide pact. They rented a motel room and slept with the fan on. Nothing happened. The second night, they tried again, but one guy chickened out and turned off the fan. The Korean media reported this as a close call.

I'm in the market for a new fan soon so I'll take a picture of the warning label.

Here's the warning that comes in the instruction guides telling you not to sleep with the fan on.

Here's one doozy of a scam to get into. Pass the word around that bylaws require a "Professional Fan disposal Technician".

Collect all the fans from those who believe this nonsense (fan death), charge a fee for said disposal and then sell the fans.

Beats the Nigerian scam hands down!

And easier than convincing an entire country that something they hold to be hard science is a superstition. You might be on to something.
