Well, they were mass produced by Parker Bros., but the William Fuld design that they used had been around for quite awhile. Parker just bought the rights to it. Spiritualists had been getting similar results with nothing more than letters on pieces of paper arranged on a glass table, using an upside down wine glass as a planchette.

Who knows what powers the Ouija board. I kinda feel like the negative things that are said about it come from religious fundamentalists who lump it into a group with divination (which I guess it is) and witchcraft.

The dangers come from people getting addicted to it and also in believing what the board tells them. If spirits really are communicating, who's to say they're telling you the truth about anything?

I'm not saying they are jokes mind you I think they can be bad... but I'm not like totally terrified to go near one is all i'm sayin though I will say never leave the planchette on the board unattended

Hello,
I am new here and I saw this thread so I thought I would drop my two cents.

From what I have heard and seen involving ouija boards, they seem to allow the subconscious mind to be opened. They aren't really a toy but they aren't really dangerous either.

Most of the people I talk to that use them regularly say that as long as you don't challenge the entity you are "talking" with (i.e. Show yourself!, etc. etc.) then no real harm will come to you. Supposedly it operates by allowing a spirit to manifest its message through the planchette. The person operating it is simply a gateway to the planchette. Now when you challenge them, they can (if you believe in this stuff) manifest on our plane of existence and then they are "free" to do as they wish.

Of course....I could be wrong. I am interested in seeing what you others think.

I hear you on that but I still remember the very bad vibes I got off the one my friend had. I still remember the look in his eyes when he told me he got rid of it and he was not joking with me. While I won't be necessarily running out of the room in sheer terror, I have a very healthy respect for them and just simply won't screw with them. I don't want to find out the hard way who or what I was talking to through them. I've learned over the years to trust my instincts or gut feelings (whatever you want to call them) and if they say 'stay away', I stay away.

Deadwood, I was speaking with someone who is a medium and he warned me very clearly not to screw with those boards. He himself won't have anything to do with them as he said you just don't know who or what you are talking with. Even if you don't challenge the entity, you can still be asking for trouble.

And I just about shit myself. I put my coffee cup down a bit too hard and Poppy started on a freak out session. To Poppy: Thanks you stupid mutt!

Interesting comments. If I had a bad experience with a Ouija board, I would for sure stay away. Tried them a few times as a kid, the thing did move, and nothing bad happened. Nothing memorable happened either, but the moving planchette was definitely cool. I do believe the scary stories though. Are you from or living in South Dakota?

Nope not from or living in South Dakota. I live a few states over.

As for screwing with ouija boards. You never know who you are talking to, unless you have experience with alternative paradigms and know what you are doing. Just touching one and asking a question can attach a spirit or other entity to you. Anger and other feelings (energy) may empower them to follow you around. Free meals and such. You can discover much with spirit boards, as long as you don't act stupid. The problem with ouija boards is, they don't have any blessings or other protective enchantments to protect the user. It would be like going online, going to a huge forum, and having absolutely NO anti-virus/firewall to protect you and everyone can see your IP (to use computers as an example). With the proper knowledge and protection, it wouldn't be bad using an ouija board. They have "psychic circles" now, which have a blessing at the start to "prevent" evil or unwanted entities....but I wouldn't trust it.

I don't really use them. I have one sitting in my dresser with a past of bad or eerie things associated with it. I just choose to disregard the dangers as I know a thing or two about how to protect myself.

Deadwood

P.S.- Perhaps I should elaborate on the "alternative paradigms" part above. Just because you follow christian, islamic, buddhist or any other belief doesn't mean you only encounter spirits from your religion. You can encounter ANYTHING. That is, if you believe in demons/ghosts/sprites or other mythical creatures. Some people believe that just getting a large enough group of people to believe in something, makes it real.

Good modern day comparison. Here's why I tried the SD angle: Deadwood is about an hour? or two from Sturgis if I remember right The warmup party for Sturgis. Long time ago, great ride...

I just started subscribing to the other boards on the website and thought I would put my cents in, as someone who has attracted much paranormal activity since I was a child, I will tell you straight up I will not even enter a home where a Ouija board was used and/or stored.

The main issue being, yes you can open a portal with any device you use, but while you let the good vibes in, the bad ones can sneak in too.

I don't think I would ever use one unless I had a protection circle and even the I would be vary weary of it.

We asked NK to show himself, repeatedly. Each time he'd change the subject.

What happened the last time was...odd to say the least. Probably the second or third scariest moment of my life. It's also why I'll never pick up another one ever again.

Usually someone would show up at my door or something oddly stupid would happen, but the last time that happened it scared the shit out of me.

We wanted to see him, he was pissy and miserable that night because I'd lent the board to my former room mates and they returned it after he wouldn't talk to them. It was stormy, cruddy outside, windy, rainy, thunder and lightning. Well, the power went out when we asked him to show himself. We thought it was coincidence, until the power on the rest of the campus came back on and my dormitory was still dark, no power, no heat. It got really really cold all of a sudden. I had a roll of toilet paper that I swiped out of the public toilet down the hall for residents, it was on my desk and I was using for kleenex because I had a cold.

Anyway, there was someone moving in the room, or something, I don't know what it was, I left a cigarette lighter on the desk next to the toilet paper. We were sitting on the floor in front of it in the middle of the room, waiting for the lights to come back on. There were only two of us, that much I'm certain of, just Erin and me, the door was locked as well because my ex boyfriend at the time was being an asshole and I never knew when he'd show up.

Anyway...Suddenly the toilet paper caught fire, someone or something struck the lighter and lit the roll. I heard the metal roller strike the flint. You know when you hear someone strike a lighter, even if you don't smoke. We managed to put it out and all NK asked us when we put the board back between us after the lights finally came back on and started talking to him again was, "U Scared now?" I dropped the fucking board and never picked it up again. I tossed the box in my trunk and had her burn the whole damn thing not too long after. I will never pick up another one as long as I live.

Hello,
It got cold because the entity needed the energy to manifest. Probably wouldn't have been so bad had you not invited him over. As for NK changing the subject, NK could have been apprehensive about it all, although judging by the toilet paper roll lighting on fire, he wasn't for long.

Whatever it was, it wasn't a random entity, it had to have some power.

Personally, I don't tell people to use boards. Usually they are unaware of the potential of them. As long as you know how to protect yourself, you cannot be harmed unless you screw something up OR summon something that you cannot control.

Look at the Key of Solomon. You can summon any being in it and it is forced to show itself, but if you are stupid enough to summon something that can swat you like a bug then you deserve what you get.

Boards aren't harmful, keep the planchette away from the board and keep it in a safe place. Also, don't ask entities you can't see or don't know BY NAME (real name, not the fake names you usually get) to show themselves.

Bah, I got off topic and my sentence structures suck....but hopefully I made sense.

I've done research since then, I haven't managed to find anything in any of the occult books I've gone through.

Nothing relating to what NK is or was or anything like that. I haven't spoken to him in years, not since we burned the board. I just always felt that he was trapped there, that he may not have ever been human, but by some odd twist of fate, we ended up with him. He always said he was a rotten bastard. He'd tell us that repeatedly, even when we thanked him for telling us something important. We always figured he'd never take us up on calling him out, so we kept trying. We tried for months, I guess he got fed up with it.

I always passed it off as Erin being stupid, the toilet paper thing. She'd come up to my room to smoke because I smoked there and I didn't care if she did. We'd pull the curtains and lock the doors because we weren't always smoking the legal stuff, if you understand what I'm saying. We weren't that night though. It was a particularly dry March for grass that year, unless you grew it yourself.

NK may have been what he was, I just hope someone or something granted him a little mercy somewhere even though he was a bastard, but some of the things he told us, he didn't have to. Some of the things he told us, we listened and usually it turned out all right. It's odd to say that he might have had some benevolent streak in him, but he might have. I know a few things he said, if he hadn't said them, I probably wouldn't be here today.

I like to think of it this way:

Angels are evil to Demons/Evil entities and Demons are evil to Angels/Good natured entities.

Just depends on what side you are on (I suppose). If you care to speak further on such things, let me know.

After a particularly disturbing occurence about 20 years ago I will not go near one. Ever. To make a (very) long story short that particular evening culminated with the planchette flying, like it was thrown, across the room and striking the wall. The nearest person to the board at the time was at least 6 feet away.

I believe that in the right hands and right circumstances, the Ouija can be a very powerful thing. I had played with it off an on when I was a kid, but with complete skepticism, because you know no one else is taking it seriously. But a couple years ago I attended a Ouija session with a local paranormal group (www.hauntedhamilton.com) When the board requested my presence. When I asked who it was, it gave the initials of my grandfather EM. Which is something that no one else in the room would have known. So I take them a little more seriously, but Im not gonna screw around with one.

Another thing too, what about Seances? This thread has reminded me of my elementary school days, when my friends and I would have little seances at recess, you know holding hands and saying bloody Mary that sort of thing. I recall this one time we had done a bloody mary session, and had asked for a sign. So we went walking around the school yard looking for our sign. What we found was a trail of blood leading from outside on the school yard to the inside of the school. Coincidence or not it was still really freaky.

No no no. Absolutely no. Leave them alone. Using a Ouija board allows ANY spirit to enter your body. Only those who have sufficient training in magick/occult should ever use them. Also, the worse your mental state is, the worse the spirits will be. Like attracts like.

I'd highly suggest you not play around with Ouija boards. They are capable of inviting inhumane entities to attach to you.

If you're going to dabble in these types of activities you should first read up on them and way of protecting yourself from spirits and entities which may not have the best intentions.

I'd suggest a book like Buckland's book of Spirit Communication.

Keep in mind that the beings you contact are very real and calling up the wrong ones can result in some very chilling effects. Of the people that I know who have used a Ouija, their accounts of them have been anything but pleasant.. It's been more than enough to entirely prevent me from being interested in ever touching one.

Good luck!

I won't touch one now...I'm into something a little more esoteric.

I picked up a set of runes, along with a great book on them and I've been playing with those somewhat. I haven't quite got the knack of interpretation yet, but I'm getting there.

I refuse to touch another Ouija board. Not after NK.

Runes are great, but I prefer the tarot. Especially the Thoth deck. More detailed and specific. I feel like I can get more out of them by gazing into them and just letting the meanings and such come to me.
