1080p vs. 1080i

Might be getting a new tv soon and I've been looking into getting an HDTV. The problem is, I don't know if I can justify spending an extra $1000 for something I won't be able to discern unless I really get up close to the tv. I can get a nice 37 inch 1080i hdtv for under 1K or I could get a 32 inch 1080p for over 2k.

Input?

1080P. Period.

1080P pwns 1080i. Both HD-DVD and Bluray will use it, the PS3 is native in it, and broadcasts are all moving to it.

1080p is twice the amount of data, twice the frames.

TV's have been running 1080i since HD came to be, but 1080p systems were always thousands more, and there was no content. Now, the tv's/projectors are somewhat affordable and it is becoming the standard. make the move! I wish I had (two years ago)

Problem is, my TV is dying and I'm looking to replace it with something that can support my current and next gen consoles and be able to be used as my computer monitor with a decent resolution. I also don't plan on buying another TV after I buy the next. I'm looking in the 32-37 inch range as a multi-player video game splits the screen into four segments and I would like to be able to see my character from the couch with ease.

To be honest with you, I never have had cable TV in my life and I only get a few channels over the air. I rarely watch actual TV programming. If I want to see a show I download it in HD.

Depending on 1080p prices next spring, I might go with one of those.

But most "HD" downloads (bittorrents) arent actually HD. They are just rips from an HD source, hence widescreen. If they were actually "HD', theyd be about, oh, say 1920×1080.

Well then, go with what Fat Louie said, he seems to be well informed about this subject. I hope you like the TV you get.

They both offer the same resolution, the progressive scan just updates the screen faster so if you have fast moving action you won't see it flicker as much. If you don't notice it flickering now you might not notice it with a HDTV either.

I've read that we can't see the difference between 1080 and 720 at the distance most of us will watch TV from.

Spend a little extra and get a decent 32 inch. The image quality goes up with price. A nice samsung or panasonic 32 inch LCD here is about $1500 to $1800. You do the conversion

So yeah, now I'm looking at just buying a computer monitor 24 inches or greater as most of them now come with plenty of inputs and support 1200p. I just can't decide between the Benq FP241WZ or the Dell 2407WFP A04. And I don't know if my video cards (two 7600GT KOs in SLI) will be able to give me a decent frame rate while playing games like oblivion.

I'd rather get the Dell 3007 HC, cheaper and higher color gamut. Plus, my video card can't run games on them. And if I blew that kind of money just for a monitor I'd have no cash left for a gfx card if I needed one. I'm really leaning towards the fp241wz right now.

So I'm still waiting for a 1920 x 1200 monitor with the following

HDMI
DVI
VGA
Component

and can do 1:1 pixel mapping on all of those sources and aspect stretching on all of them. The BenQ FP241W is close, but it upscales the HDMI source and cuts the sides off, while the FP241WZ doesn't even do 1:1.

But in the mean time, I need a new graphics card to run this until I can get an 8800/8900 GTX/Ultra card with a new computer. I'm looking at an 8800 GTS 640, but I'm wondering if my CPU (athlon 3700+) would hold it back too much? Should I just live in a world of terrible FPS rates until I can get a new computer too or should I just sell my 7600 GT KO SLI system and get an 8800 GTS?

i was considering getting an 8800GTX, until i read an article in this months Maximum PC saying that directX 10 games are more then a year away, and by that time, the 8800 may only be a middle of the line card. so, unless you are running Vista (which i won't touch untill a service pack comes out) it wouldn't be your CPU holding you back. What are your full specs? and what socket AMD do you have, 939 or AM2?

Right now I'm rocking a 3700+ 939 with an 8800GTS 640. There are some DX10 games and patches coming out this spring, and crysis might be out in the fall.
