The villain

I've been throwing a lot of game ideas around in my head, and have some great concepts, but I also have had a thought. I would love to make a game where the player is the villain. I'm not talking cartoonish violence like GTA. I'm more talking a character of pure evil, preying on the innocent for their own means. Somehow, I have trouble believing a game like this would ever actually take off or sell. I'm just wondering what others' thoughts on this are.

I think it would do very well, actually. It's not too common (though not entirely new either), and the games from "the villain's" standpoint tend to do pretty well.

I have quite a twisted mind, so I think that my level of evil for the character wouldn't really go over that well. I'm talking something like a game where you play as Jack the Ripper. That's not anywhere close to what I actually have in mind, but it's a good comparison. I'm not saying your character is just a bad guy. I'm saying your character is evil almost to a devil-like level and you have a tendency to eviscerate people and eat their organs.

the thief engine with the main character of the ripper.. Could be an entertaining game.. but you know the brainwashing of kids to slaughter thier families is frowned upon now days.. so needless to say a game like that would get ALOT of flak...

If you play Knights of the Old Republic you have a choice of playing "lightside" or "darkside". Darkside involves making some very cruel and sadistic choices including making one of your party members kill his best friend.

Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years.

Take a look at the Dungeon Master games, Black and White, or Fable. The first is where you play "the bad guy", the others give you the option to.

All excellent games that I've played through many times. Fable definitely starts going in the direction I'm thinking, but I'm thinking even darker and more evil.
