Landlords?

I am a renter and every landlord I've ever had since I moved out on my own has been a complete douchebag. One I had was a crack dealer, one was never around and she never fixed anything and now, the landlord we have doesnt turn heat on, doesnt repair anything. We had to resort to calling Building Inspections at our city hall to come in and inspect everything. Eventually, our landlord got a nice call informing him of everything he isn't doing right! Finally we are seeing progress.... stupid asshole..

Ah,landlords.

I've had several,but a few were notable.

A woman who bought a few places for an investment, but neglected to learn any more English besides "where's money".

A really great guy that rented his house to us dirt cheap, had us doing ALOT of work because he was going to sell it to us,then died. His MIA kids swooped in like buzzards, moved in,then lost the house nine months later.

My current one is 77,and uses his age to feign stupidity and forgetfulness at his leisure and discretion.
He has carved five illegal apartments out of this building, yet has parking for only two. He has 'forgotten' to turn on the heat in my place thus far, save for a single rad in my bedroom.
There is mold on the bathroom wall near the floor, and there's water seeping up underneath the tile in there. Mr.Forgetful said it must be the toilet,so let's replace it. A new, boxed toilet has been sitting in my livingroom for over a week,he told us 'it won't take us (as in US,not him) long to install it at all'. Uh huh.
He's a glass to the wall type who knows everyone's business and will gleefully tell you anything.

I'm glad you're seeing progress,I imagine I'll be seeing some myself when the rent isn't handed over to him next month.

I hate hearing bad landlord stories. I've only rented from one landlord, and she's amazing. She fixes stuff within a day or two, has let us be three (!) months late on the rent when my roommate lost his job, occasionally brings us delightful baked goods, and bought my lunch when I ran into her at a restaurant.

I don't think I ever had a really bad landlord, but thinking back reminded me of:

1) Little old lady who didn't want to rent to 3 young guys, until the end of our meeting, when she was ushering us out the door, and it came up that my buddy's father had been the heart surgeon who had saved her husband's life years ago.

2) Crazy, gay, Austrian, body builder.

3) Regional air traffic controller (bat shit crazy).

But, I do have someone else's bad landlord story to tell. A good friend of mine had a landlord who somehow lost his own place, so he moved onto the couch in the house my friends were renting. This might not be TOO bad, except that the guy kept bringing young boys (and by this, I supposedly mean 18 years old) back and having loud, screaming sex with them on the couch, in the living room, a few feet from my friend's room.

Sounds like you should really get a hold of some building inspectors yourself.

the funny thing though, is that we told our landlord 3 or more times that a) the heat wasn't on and that we were freezing (9 degrees celsius at night) b) that some of the floor boards are sinking in and c) that there were random wires just chilling out all over the place
and he never did anything about it.. so now that we had called someone to come and inspect, he's all nervous and mad about it... it's his own fault for never listening!

No no...tell me about this one.

This one isn't bad. How'd it end?

Well, like I said, he wasn't that bad, but it was weird because he was just like the old Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon Saturday Night Live body builder characters.

As all good landlord stories end; lots of shame and humiliation.

Update: We had inspectors come in and evaluate the place and then they told my landlord what was wrong and told him to turn up the heat. The day they called him, he turned the heat up high but only did so for three days. After those three days, he stopped turning the heat on high.... we were back at 8-9 degrees at night and 11- 12 degrees celsius in the day time as temperatures (in the city we live in, the temperatures are supposed to be 19-20 degrees all the time). Also, the inspectors told him to repair the whole floor in the bathroom (there were many spots where the floor boards were falling apart and when you walked on them, they sank in...) and instead of actually redoing the floor, he gets his buddy to come in and put peel and stick tiles over the damaged spots. How is that a solution???
Oh and another thing: I took a shower the other day and my shower head broke (its one of those hand held ones) and I told him about it and he gave us a new shower head. The thing is that the old one is difficult to remove. There is no threading where it can be twisted off. We tried pulling it off, and that doesn't work. So, we cant put on the new shower head and he told us that its not his problem! I havent had a shower since yesterday morning and im fucking pissed off! At least I dont smell at all yet lol.

Get the inspectors in again. I'm sure after soooo many times that the LL will be tagged a slumlord.

Two of my friends are landlords... there are some pretty bad tenants out there also.

People just leave any garbage at the curb or down the garbage shoots. They leave beds and dressers, pots, pans, clothes, lamps.... everything you can think off. When moving-out day happens, they seem to think the apartment or the curb are garbage transfer stations.

Tenants insist on damaging the walls and always take apart the smoke detectors.

They are the first to complain if they lose money to a landlord but try getting damages from a tenant.

They illegally install satallite dishes on roof tops and balconies causing damage to roofing and concrete.

They are loud and other tenants blame the landlord. The loud tenants get angry with the landlord for asking them to be quiet.

They park anywhere

Change oil in the parking lots and spill without care

They pay rent late

They piss in elevators

Landlords and tenants suck. Buy a house.

If I was the friend in question, I would have made the asshole's life miserable.

My last landlord was the typical dirt bag that did not fix things and then would come into the unit without our knowledge and permission. The first two superintendant couples were great (they did their best at doing repairs but finally quit when the landlord reamed them for wasting his money on repairs). I had to put pressure on the next two superintendants for repairs and when the fridge died, the guy told me it will be a 'few weeks at least before we could look at the fridge and don't know how long it will be before the fridge is fixed'. I told him I will contact the rent review board and his boss will not be happy when he is faced with a significantly reduced rent. Fridge replaced in three days. The final straw was when I was woken up one fine morning by the superintendant in my bedroom and promptly told him to "Get the f**k out of my room while I get some clothes on!" He was checking for a leak and ended up tracking mud through the bedroom and bathroom. We finally moved out after that.

A land lady my Dad and I had was another one who didn't want to fix anything and when my Dad died, was rather insistent I leave her the appliances that Dad bought (she claimed that she bought them with the building). I pointed out to her that we have the receipts (the building was newly renovated at the time and the former landlord didn't have the appliances then so Dad bought them). I removed the appliances and when she threatened to have me charged with theft, I told her she will look really foolish when the cops see the receipts for them. To add insult to injury, she cashed two cheques for that month. We got our money back and she was madder than hell at me because the bank nailed her for the money.

Yup, I hear you there.

My brother was a landlord and I've helped clean up some pretty big messes from former tenants. Not to mention, I've heard some pretty stupid things from the tenants. For example: One tenant moved in with her boy friend, daughter and son. She told us her daughter was 13. Anyway, she called my brother's wife crying that her daughter ran off with her boyfriend and as landlords, my brother and his wife are responsible for getting her daughter back so she can be happy again. My sister in law said, "Call the police."
The reply: "I can't! She's 18!"
Sis's response, "This is a family matter. We are only responsible for the house. Good bye!" and hung up.
When my sister in law told me about this (I overheard the conversation), I pointed out that it's not our fault that the daughter is a slut like the mother.
And yes, the mother is a slut in my opinion because she has offered sex to my brother and I in exchange for the rent and quite frankly, I would swear off sex rather than do it with her. <gagging at the memory>

My last post was about bad landlords and yes, there are bad tenants. Damned shame the bad landlords aren't stuck with the bad tenants and the good landlords are given the good tenants. Life would be much easier.
And if that happens, don't pinch me 'cause I know I'm dreaming.

And yes, life has been much easier since shutterbug and I bought our house.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.
