So, I know this kid a bit, he belongs to a Pentecostal church. His dad is studying to be a minister, so I asked him if his dad spoke in tongues. Not only has his father done this, but he said he also has spoken in tongues. I have no reason not to believe him. He said that if someone was telling him that he'd be like "WTF?" Interesting.

I dated a girl that believed in it. She even did it in front of me a few times. Freaked me right out, because honestly, although there's nothing supernatural about it, it didn't sound like gibberish. It actually sounded like she was speaking some language that didn't sound like any I'd ever heard.

But, like I said, it's not supernatural. Google: glossolalia

Has anyone seen the movie Jesus Camp? Lots of kids "speaking in tongues."

Seems to me if their god actually existed, and was truly all powerful, he could probably figure out how to make them speak english when he had something to say.

It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics. Speaking in tongues is all a farce. I've seen it before. Makes me laugh at how incredibly stupid and naive people really are. That and being "slain in spirit."

Faith is a funny thing, not that I have a speck of it myself, but those that do have it do incredible thing to which they attribute faith.

Not anymore. Now I have a much more interesting career.

This is a great topic.

Thomas Paine, in The Age of Reason, asked: "Is it more probable that nature should go out of her course, or that a man should tell a lie? We have never seen, in our time, nature go out of her course; but we have good reason to believe that millions of lies have been told in the same time; it is, therefore, at least millions to one, that the reporter of a miracle tells a lie."

The very idea that claims, such as speaking in tongues, should be afforded a different burden of proof than other incredible claims is offensive.

It is called special pleading, and that renders all arguments based on faith invalid.

For example, can I claim that the holocaust never happened, based on my religious beliefs? Would any of you ask for evidence if I proposed teaching this idea in school?

Can George Bush use his faith as evidence that he should invade Iraq, or would the rest of the world demand more evidence?

I'm going to assume that this is one of them fancy rhetorical questions.
