	My DVD writer is a BenQ 1620. It no longer recognizes DVD-R blank media but WILL recognize factory-pressed movie DVDs, previously burned DVD-Rs, blank DVD-RW, blank CD-Rs, previously burned CD-Rs and factory pressed music CDs, plus software, game and previously burned data DVD-Rs. When I put a blank DVD-R in the green light will flash for a few seconds then go off, the writer fails to recognize it. Any ideas? It's really annoying that it simply will not recognize blank DVD-R media anymore. I have not yet tried DVD+R media.

	I'm not sure, i had this problem a few years ago and just ended up getting a new drive. I would go to www.maximumpc.com and ask in one of their forums, they are really helpful over there.

	Yeah, it's really odd. All of a sudden just blank DVD-R media stopped being recognized. I'll give MaxPC I shot. Thanks for the tip, Kbasa!

	Mine does the exact opposite. It writes only and detects blanks, but won't read commercial or home burned. Since I have another DVD drive its no big deal though.

	OK. well, here's the wackiness of the situation. I bought the computer with the DVD writer in early 2005. It burned DVD-Rs no problemo up til this week. So, I call BenQ and they say the 1620 RW model was never designed to record to DVD-R in the first place, only to DVD+R. LOL, so I go out and buy a spindle of DVD+Rs at Future Shop (Philips 100-pack top of the line quality for CAD$26.99) and, voila!, it writes perfectly. I ripped my Children Of Men DVD to DVD+R and it played back flawlessly on my stand-alone DVD player in my living room. Weird shit!
