This board's been kind of dead lately, so I figured I'd give it a jump.

What's your favorite kind/brand/etc of film & why? I'm really happy with my Fuji Provia & Reala 100's, but I'm alway open to try new films.

So yah...Fuji Provia 100F for color slides & Fuji Reala 100 for color negatives. Fuji's colors rock (awesome blues) and they both push really well.

I swear, looking at projected Provia slides, you feel like you're there...the colors are THAT good.

Who's next?

Provia 100f is an awesome film.

However for prints I'm particular towards Kodak Portra 160NC

Black and White is Ilford HP5 or Super XP2

For B&W for best detail, latitude, and lack of grain, use FP4 with Pyro PMK developer, and up the activator (part A) a wee bit. I use 13 parts A to 20 parts B to 1000 parts deionized water. It's hands down the best all around. Efke 25 developed the same *can* be good. Their quality control is kinda in the pits. Basically hit and miss.

C41: Portra 160VC and 400VC. Fujicolour Press 800 in a pinch.

E6: Velvia 100, Provia 100F. Insane colour, i have yet to try the new Velvia 50.

BW: Delta 400, Delta 100, HP5. I still have 15 rolls of 35mm APX100 in my fridge, too. Everything gets developed in Rodinal 1+100.

For medium format, I'd have to say Fuji chrome 120 Iso 100, colors really pop out at you and has a warm look.

For 35mm I always use Kodak professional 100, used it for years and well I dunno just kinda stuck with me.

Ilford HP5 for BWs and I would _love_ to order Fuju Provia for color slides, but I'm always too lazy to do it. They just stock Kodak around here

Hey all. Just got a Canon AE-1 with a Vivitar 300mm FD Macro Zoom Lens, and only paid $30 for both (free bag)! So I joined this group...

Any recommendations on film?

Would also like to know if a digital flash would work with the mount on the camera?

Heading out to buy a shutter release and battery today.

I take it this is your first time working with an older film camera, if so go with a Fuji Superia 200 or 400 film, cheap but good results.

No, your digital flash won't work with the older mount (at least not to my knowledge).

I thought the hot pin would still trigger the flash, you'd just need to manually set the power lever on the flash.

Could be wrong though.

It's my first time with film, period. I currently use digital, which I love for Macro and Outdoor shots. I'm using the AE-1 for long exposures and painting, until I get enough funds for a Canon D40 (it'll be a while).

If you want lots of contrast, shoot slide - specifically Velvia. Most negative film is lower in contrast and has better exposure latitude (which tends, on the whole, to be a good thing for negative film).

something i've been wondering: how do you make prints from slide film since it's positive?

You either use a positive printing process (such as r-print or ilfochrome) or you scan it and print digitally (most labs that have a Fuji Frontier or similar machine can do this since the Frontier always prints by scanning digitally and then burning the image onto paper with lasers (or something like that)).
