| | | Posted by Sinister Crayon I don't owe the government money to pay you: welfare healthcare medicare social security food stamps and what-ever else you demand that you are provided. You have the right to make your own decisions. That includes your job, your career, your retirement fund, your healthcare plan, whether you run over your arm with the car, etc. If you make poor decisions, you pay the consequences.

You go to school while on Welfare, you are attempting to support yourself by continuing your education. You are the type of person who will later contribute to our society therefore allowing others to pull themselves out of poverty, good luck and good for you. I don't mind my tax dollars going to help in situations like yours
| I agree wholeheartedly with this, this is what assistance was meant for. A wee sample of what it isn't meant for; A certain someone I know is about 34,two school aged kids and has never worked a day in her life. She was on welfare, until she was able to get disability for depression (which has never interfered with her partying and dope habit, just getting a job). Because disability took so long kicking in,she was given a 10,000 lump sum once it did, getting her a newer car and lots of bling for her undeclared live in boyfriend.Who grows pot out of the basement of their public housing unit for even more cash. And when that's not enough, she'll sell some of the myriad of pills she's prescribed, too. So for me,that's where I have a problem with this, but certainly NOT for people who honestly need it.

| Monster, you are 100% correct. Her mother keeps a special cane for doctor's visits,to keep her disability rolling. And Roygvib, she has been reported no less than three times.Wanna know what happens? She is sent a letter or gets a phone call stating that she's being investigated, thus giving her ample time to temporarily remove the boyfriend and his stuff before they 'investigate'. Then she laughs her fat, lazy ass off that she's beat it again. Last time I checked ,I've never heard of the police tipping people off before they raid someone or something. I'm not a rat,but people who pull this shit piss me off to no end,and Hamilton is rampant with them. Oh yeah, and I should mention that her kids get free access to hockey and many other sports programs year after year that my kids can't go to because I'm stupid enough to work a menial job for a living. Good for the kids, but go figure, huh?

| | | Posted by Roygbiv Also I should mention, welfare is not this plentiful bounty of the gods, bestowed upon you by the government. Most people think that government welfare is some kind of huge check with tons of zeros on it that you get for doing nothing. That is not at all true. The welfare payment we get is equivalent to working a $3.75/hour job. What's more, I must show proof that I am working or in school every 3 months, I cannot claim a fucking dime without declaring it, I cannot own a car while on assistance if it is worth more than $4000 and I need to go through shit loads of paper work if I do get a job AND I must keep them updated on every tiny salary change that happens. I don't have a problem with any of that, because I'm an honest person... as is my family, however I wanted to make it clear that welfare is not a walk through the park. It's almost a type of parole.
| heh... you need to move to Essex County, NY... the people on welfare here live better than I do! Hell, the fucking county will buy you a car, even get the one you've got fixed as long as you tell them that you'd like to look for a job. the worst part is, i'm not even making this up. Back in 1995, i was pretty much at the bottom... I was trying to finish tech school, was depressed beyond words and my mom, who made everything worse in her special way, demanded that i start helping out around the house... so i went on the welfare for a couple of months. It was the most humiliating experience of my young life. It was very humbling and I asked myself, how can the career welfare riff-raff look people in their faces after this? Samurai

| A lot of them just don't give a shit or feel they are entitled to this. A former girlfriend of mine was on welfare the last time we talked. The guy she dumped me for is on drugs, has never worked a day in his life and has a lengthy criminal record. She tried to talk me into quitting college and moving in with her. "It would be great. We can party all the time and not worry about a thing." (her exact words). I pointed out to her that welfare won't necessarily last the whole month. She told me "No problem. We'll just make up a sob story and get more cash. Mom does that all the time." We were finished about two months later. And here's something that would disgust a lot of people. My brother owned a house that he was renting out. The tenants that were on welfare would not pay and ended up being evicted. Sure, they had lots of cash for pizza, beer and toys like electronic equipment and exercise machines that were never used but suddenly they didn't have any cash for the rent. One even went so far as to tell my brother that she resents the fact that her "hard earned rent money is going to pay your mortgage". Yup. Walking to the mail box and then to the bank to cash the cheque is very hard work. My brother said "Fine. I'll just let the bank take this place and you can tell them that." Anyway, he reported her to the welfare office using the "snitch line" that the government put in place to report welfare cheats. He called and was told this has to be reported directly to her case worker. He asked for the case worker's name and was told that information can't be divulged due to privacy concerns. Wonderful eh? I don't have a problem with helping someone who is down on their luck through this assistance, but I do have a problem when this is abused and I have to work harder to support myself because more cash is being taken away from me to support that kind of abuse.
