So i was browsing craigslist and found a guy selling a nice looking Korg minikontrol, http://www.korg.co...OD_NO=microkontrol i was wondering if you can make custom synth type noises with somethig like this when it is hooked up to a computer.

Any help is appreciated thanks.

You can if you have a soft synth - that's a synthesizer program on your computer. This is simply a controller. You need to hook it up to something to control.

*I'm a guitar guy, these are the facts as I understand them, not necessarily the facts.

yep.

yeah and it is awesome!

I own this one:

http://www.m-audio.../Axiom49-main.html

and it works great with a few music programs I already used..

such as FL studio 7, and Reason 4. I am not a fan of Ableton Live but it does work well with that too.

Awesome stuff you can do with it.

Any synth you have on the computer, it can control pretty much.

Also, included in yours (and i've got am 8 pad half sized one) is some sampler pads, which is great for drum sequencing, hip hop style sliced sample sequencing, and pad sample sequencing...

It was one of the better investments I've made for the home studio.

edit:

here is the montreal price for the one you posted a picture of:

http://www.moogaud...51&products_id=250

hope the person offered it for a good deal.

Bringing this thread back on the top...

If anyone wants more info on MIDI hardware, controllers, modules, keyboards, computer MIDI sequencers, and MIDI data... Ask me.

I've worked with MIDI applications and equipment for well over 16 years, and I also hold titles of Audio Engineer, Production Director, Composer/Film Scorer, and MIDI Orchestrator.

See my welcome post for equipment I use in the studio...

I'm probably gonna get a cheapo midi controller in the next couple months when I get a job and look forward to learning keyboard and music editing software.

Korg has a 61- & 76-key controller with free software. I believe it also has some cool on-board sounds as well. If I recall (from sales work) it runs around $149-ish. Check out guitarcenter.com or musiciansfriend.com for more info...

i just noticed the m-audio ozone (not 100% sure of the model name etc)

anyways, it is a small 25 key midi usb controller, with a built in usb audio interface. I think it's a 4 in 2 out or something like that, and that is not including the midi ports.

Not a bad deal for 200 bucks if you aren't doing anything fancy.

Yeah, the M-Audio models are great, but for the same price as one of those 25-key boards, you could buy the Korg controllers (61 or 76 key) that have 1 IN/2 OUT for MIDI, 2 audio outs with sustain pedal jacks, and comes complete with a copy of Cubase and an entire library of the sampled sounds from most all of Korg's 1980-1990 keyboards, modules, and samplers; all in one complete software package.

But I enjoy M-Audio too. Not a huge fan of Roland however.

well i paid $220 CAD for an axiom 49, which is an m-audio 49 key. however it also has some sampler pads, faders, knobs, and a bunch of other buttons.

This controller came with ableton live, but I dont use it since I have cubase, reason, fl studio, magix sampletude, and a pile of other programs (which are free off the internet)

These programs are nice, but mainly the only thing I need is a solid sequencer, some effects and EQs and stuff like that. Oh, and some VSTs to add some extra sounds here and there.

Pro Tools 7.4:

If you don't want the I/O interface, just get the USB attachment, and PT will run off of that. Has an excellent MIDI sequencer, full line of free plugins, VST's, and synth plugins to use with it. It has everything that Cubase has, and much more.

Check it out at digidesign.com for more info, pics, and videos.

(I sound like a sales guy again...)

you know i might try giving it a shot again.. a couple of years ago I tried downloading it and didn't have much luck with it because it seemed to rely on the interface. But i might give it another shot. Cubase I use mostly for recording around the house.
