Brakes failed, and I got creamed by a car

I was riding my pride, joy, and love (1969 Raleigh converted to a coasterbrake townie) when the brake failed, the chain popped off, and I couldn't stop myself from going into traffic. Got hit oh so hard, and I'm lucky to be alive as I didn't have a helmet on. Pretty much every part of the bike is damaged.

Pics? Pics:

Oh, man. That bites. I hope you are in better shape than that bike!

Ouch!

Getting hit hard by a car is no fun. I speak from experience. My bike ended up looking a lot like yours (w/o the nifty cupholer on the handlebars.)

Sorry about the bike, but...you're okay, right?

yeah. I'm fine, and quite glad about it too. I'm going to see if the bike can be salvaged; I know a guy who might bend the frame back into place for me, if it can be done.

That's in the title, man. More specifically: the front of a small sedan of some sort. I can't remember too well. I think I may have fucked up his grill actually; I did see his bent license plate fly through the air behind me.

maybe that's why i like having the redundancy of having front and rear cable brakes. not enough time to pull a lil flatlander shove foot into front tire i would assume?

I almost got creamed by a bus, so a car is nothing. Luckly the bus had good brakes.

I used to get lazy about chain tension on my single-speed fixie. I know it only takes like 3 minutes to get out the tools and fix it, but somehow I never managed to get my ass out of the chair and do it.

Until I popped my chain off in downtown Boston. Thank god I have brakes. So, let this be a lesson for everyone: if you can deflect your chain up-and-down more than an inch, it's time to nudge that wheel out a bit. Losing your chain sucks, hard.

This makes me wonder ... Where were the brakes in the first place? Or is this one of those paddle-back-to-brake bikes?

I'm so lucky to have front and back cable (drum) brakes - and 3 gears - and saddlebags - and normal fenders - and front and back light - and front and back retroreflectors - and a bell - and a chain guard - and shoes on that I can brake with if all else would fail...

I don't get how you americans can be so safety-minded (everything has a warning on it) yet be able to ride a bike like yours. You should be happy to not get sued by the car owner...

Hey IIVQ, are you like 12 feet tall? That frame especially the headtube looks gigantic!

What exactly are you indicating when you say that us Americans are so safety-minded, yet our bikes look like that?

I am a bicycle mechanic, and do not see anything significantly wrong with his bike, other than chain tension. Which is clearly the cause of the incident, but that could have been caused by the wheel slipping in the dropouts during his ride...

How do you brake? Yes, only method is to use the friction on the back wheel working against your muscles. I have two drum brakes, one on the front and one on the back wheel, and things like lights, a chain guard, reflectors etc. I don't have a bell though. (that is mandatory)

Glad you're OK. Looks like you got lucky. I hope you'll be getting a helmet some time soon. A front brake is a good insurance policy as well.
