XBox 360 question

I'm thinking about purchasing an XBox 360 Core system, however I have a question about having something (or lack of) to save games on.

The Core system does not come with the external hard drive, or a memory card, and from what I understand, there is no internal hard drive ether. However, I want to know if there are cheaper alternatives to save the progress of my games.

I can buy a Core system for about $399, however to get a 20 gig Xbox hard drive will cost an additional $120 -which will mean that it will turn out to be more expensive than to just buy the "premium" version that already comes with a 20 gig hard drive. As for the 360 memory cards, they cost about $40 for 64mB, or $70 for the 512 mB -if I'm going to spend that much for so little, I mind as well buy the 20 G hard drive -however if I buy that, than I mind as well buy the "premium" version that already comes with the hard drive!

My question is, is there a cheap alternative to saving my game profiles and progress on the XBox 360 Core system? Can I just use a plain ordinary usb memory stick to save my games to? Can I use an ordinary usb mounted hard drive for this also? Can this be done without having to mod the XBox 360?

I know that there is a way to save your games on an external hard drive unfortunately I have no idea how to got about doing it and I believe it is more trouble than just buckin up the extra 100 for the premium system.

honestly, I'd buy the premium system and be done with it.
I dont believe that the core system comes with a wireless controller and that along with the hard drive is worth the extra $100 for the premium
not to mention most of the good current games basically require the HDD.

I know you asked specifically about the core system but I would obviously caution you against buying it.....go with the premium.

there are also an ass load of xbox forums that could possibly explain how to use an external HDD for game storage.

hope this helps

I have been reading up on it, and it looks like I can only use the USB mounted hard drive or USB sticks for media files -and not game saves

I really don't want to get the "premium" version -the only extra I care about is the hard drive. If I'm going to have to spend over $500 for an XBox 360 that I can save games on, than I will just wait another year for it to drop in price -or until I find someone in the Hamilton area that is selling a used 360 that I can trust enough that it isnt junked.

yeah, stay away from the core version
As soon as you have felt the wirless controller, you never want wires again
i've had the 20GB version since December 2005, and my 20Gb Hd is not even close to being full. the 64mb card is a waste of money, because you can't save much on it, the 512 costs too much.

or you could buy the core, and check
EB games for a used HD, will probably only be $70 or so.

And as soon as you buy one, add my gamertag!

I got the elite and kinda liking the HDMI port with the extra 100GB on the hard drive....

But, since you want to save some $$, go with the premium... the core is a rip. No HD interface, no HDD, no wireless controller, no headset, etc.

The premium will save you $$ in the end...
