C Section - Awake? Or Not Awake?

I am planning on having another C-Section in January when I am due.

With my first delivery, it ended up being a STAT C-section and I was put under general anesthetic.

This time around, I have the option of being awake, or not, again.

I plan to have my tubes tied in the process, but am I the only one to feel like I don't want to be awake while they are cutting me?

The only thing I am worried about is that during my previous labour, my epidural wore off, and they told me "It's only a 10% chance it will do that"

AND YOU GET AN EPIDURAL (or spinal) TO HAVE A C-SECTION!

Opinions are welcomed... even from the guys.

Squidgit honey you are the one going through it and only you can make that choice. I did not have a C with either of my kids. With Raech, my first there were some bad complications and I had to have a radical E cut with no local or anything. She was too far down for a C section. I know it hurt like hell but as soon as I saw her the pain was gone from my mind and I never gave it another thought.

We can give you all the advise from personal experience and preference but just remember you going to be a very busy mommy with 2 little ones and you know what you can tolerate. Be kind to yourself. Talk to the doctor about your concerns and go with what feels right.

I agree with this. Its your decision, but personally I would stay awake to experience it. Even if something did happen and it wore off, they would do something quick to put you under. The chances of that happening tho are not very good, so I'd stay awake. I plan on getting pregnant again soon... (hopefully) and if it came to it, I'd stay awake.

I was just wondering people's PERSONAL opinion. I will not take these suggesting in any way into consideration... just wanted opinions and such.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough about that in my first post

It's really your choice. But you did ask for opinions. My wife had a spinal for both our boys. She was awake, but very sick from the drugs. She had a vomit pan next to her head most of the delivery. She did not feel anything, just some pulling and tugging. She did get to see both boys right after they were pulled out, but it was I who got to hold them both first. The staff actually secured her arms due to some safety issue, so she was awake, but not very with it. The spinal makes you shake in post-op, I mean shake like you got the freeze.

Man, you're lucky. I can't have an epidural at all. For two reasons...

1 - Fused discs
2 - Taking lovenox shots daily

and i'm allergic to morphine. what a rip off!!!! have fun in la la land!

My vote is for awake. I would not want to miss anything if I had a choice. Not that what I went through was as bad a C minus yucky details. Like I said in my first post once I saw her I was not even thinking of the pain.

My wife just had a 2nd c-section last week and i have been in the room for both of them (Really cool to get to watch!) and if you can get a spinal. She had a spinal the first time and while she waitied 12 hours till the freezing was fully out, she was pretty good afterwards. This time they couldnt get the spinal to work so did an epideral. she didn't feel pain but did feel tehm working on her. she has had more issues now since the epideral and is still trying to recover 1 1/2 weeks later... but it is rare like that.

Enjoy the C-Section. give someone with a strong stomach to come in with you. General anasthetic is very rare to use and unfortunatly you miss the joy of birth.

Ya, I unfortunately had to have a general anaesthetic the first time around, and was quite disappointed how things went.. but my first babe is healthy and that's all that matters.

I'm hoping nothing goes wrong this time around, and I can stay awake and experience my baby's birth this time around... We shall see in January!

My wife had an emergency C for our first under a rapid general followed by a quick shot of naloxone to rapidly bring her out of the general as she has had problems with medications before. That was the worst part, the rapid drug changes. She was in a great deal of pain after for the following month mostly due to the nature and speed of the c-section.

My second child was delivered under a spinal anesthetic, and my wife was awake for the delivery, and able to walk around the next day. The advantage of the spinal was that she could talk with the anesthesiologist and discuss her current feelings of pain / nausea or her wanton lust for me and cheetos. (ok, I added that in, she doesnt like cheetos) The anesthesiologist was able to instantly infuse her IV or her spinal with what was needed.

I'm not sure how its set up where you are, but here the local anesthetic c-sections are done with a spinal rather than an epidural.

I always thought the epidural was a spinal. They go through the spinal wall, through the cartilage.

...wonton lust, eh? Is that the order #13?
