I'm gonna agree with the Professor here. That was true back in the Pentium 4 vs. Athlon64 days but certainly not since the Core 2 Duo has come out. The original C2D's were actually rumored to run so cool that you could run them without only a passive cooler (or something to that effect) with stability. Recent revisions (especially some of the Wolfdale's) run a lot hotter but still within reasonable levels compared to the Prescott's of 3 years ago.

and the new 45nm run so cool it's retarded (especially when you look at the performance).

Well I sold my workstation last week and I'm now 100% running off my laptop. God I miss her. The laptop is painfully slow compared to my old desktop in CS3. Thankfully I'm only using it for light computing and the occasional photoshop for my own personal stuff.

Acer Aspire 5630
Centrino Duo T5200 @ 1.6Ghz
2gb DDR2 667
160gb 7200RPM Seagate drive (I replaced the 120gb 5400)
15.4 inch LCD
Samsung 916V 19inch LCD as second monitor
Razer Deathhadder

2x 500gb Seagate 7200.11 ES in a Vantec MX JBOD enclosure
1x 320gb Seagate 7200.10 ES in a CoolerMaster Xcraft enclosure
1X 500gb Seagate 7200.10 ES in an Antec MX-100 enclosure
1x 500gb Lacie HD

3Com Home Connect USB webcam (ancient)
Windows XP Pro w/SP3

My bedroom PC (mostly used for watching movies from bed)

2 x 256MB generic DDR RAM (512MB total)
Seagate 40GB IDE HD

I have a few computers, I mostly use my laptop it's really my main computer.
Klaatu (Laptop)
Ubuntu 8.4.01
Pentium M 1.6Ghz
1.25GB RAM
40GB HDD (i'm going to be upping this to a 120GB soon)
15" screen
El-Crapo graphics, but it does what I need it to.

Verada (Main server)
This is my main server, It's runs a Print Server and a File Server.
OpenBSD 4.2
P4 2.8Ghz
2GB RAM
4 750gb HDD in RAID 1 so really only 1.5TB in actual space
ATI 9700 Pro

Also 2 other's, not sure of all the specs on them. One is just the cpu running smoothwall. The other is used for when friends want to browse the web, it's running windows xp with deepfreeze a reboot and it's reset.

And yes the other computer is named Nicto.

My rig is very long in the tooth:

AMD 3800 Dual Core
ASUS M2N-E (eh, I think, at work right now)
eVGA 9800GT 512M
Antec case w/Fortron 400w power supply
2x512M Samsung PC3200
320G Seagate HD
Crappy 20 inch Acer LCD 1680x1050
Nostromo Speedpad N52
Logitech MX510 gaming mouse w/RatPadz
+ other dullish stuff

I upgraded the vidcard from a Sapphire x1950Pro last week (only $100 for the 9800GT!!) but now I realize I am processor constrained for CoD4, UT3 etc. Will go the cheap route with an E7200 with an aftermarket cooler that I should be able to get to 3.5-3.7 depending on what motherboard I buy plus 2G of mediocre RAM - should cost $250 with tax and shipping.

I finally got annoyed with my laptop and bought a new one. Quite the upgrade from my acer (ugh).

Lenovo Thinkpad T500
15.4 WSXGA+ 1680 X 1050
T9400 2.53Ghz 1066Mhz 6MB
4GB DDR3 1066Mhz
200GB 7200RPM
Bluetooth2.0, Intel Wifilink 5300, webcam, fingerprint reader, DVD burner, 9cell battery
I also bought the media extender thing which lets me replace the DVD drive with a regular 2.5 SATA hard drive. So I also have a 500gb drive with all my music and movies and shit. I fucking love this laptop and I don't really miss my old desktop anymore.

It's kind of nice to have things like solidworks actually run smoothly for once.

Bah. I just sold the new system I bought for a 400$ profit <.<

So until February:
AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+
2GB (2x 1GB Corsair DDR-800, Dual Channel)
Geforce 7950 GX2
System: 3x Western Digital RAPTOR 74GB 10kRPM drives in RAID 0 (16KB Stripes).
Data: 2x Seagate NS/ES Enterprise 250GB S-ATA Drives w/32MB Cache.
Backup: 1x 1TB Hitachi Cinemastar.

Funnily enough, in the last three months I've mostly only used my EeePC 901. I need to get a 15GB SD card for it...

Other than that, I'm working on a fancy media-centre. Probably going to use the dual-core Atom for it...
