I have to say one of the long time things I wanted is a waterproof throat mic. Since We are in the water constantly it has become almost a necesity to have everything waterproofed. I will add some suggestive places to go if people are interested. Although most are exspensive.

Motorola sells a submersable version of it's Saber, Astro Saber and XTS series of radios. They also sell speaker-mics for the Submersable radios as well.

I've never tried these, but their website says they are good to 300 and something feet.

As a rule though, Motorola radios don't have any issues getting abit wet from rain and snow and what not.

Try that with an FRS radio

Yeah but the price for there stuff is ungodly high. Especailly the throat mics. By the way I have a concept for the FRS radios. You know the clear waterproof radio bags. One of those with a slight and a adaptor plug. Seal the plug in and plug the radio into that and headset into the bag. Waterproof radio even if your mic isnt. Just keep your head up.

Yes, that's right, that's why Mike buys their stuff, so he can look rich.

J/K.

I can get some pretty nice headsets, boom and mic with single earpiece, for quite good prices. Handsfree is pretty important, and if you cant go for the super resistant super expensive shit then it's best to get something you don't mind losing.

Let me know if you are interested.

Keep in mind that's $2,000 for what is easily over 10 grand in actual value...

I'd spend about $50 on a headset. I hate that earbud rubbish with the microphone dangling about everywhere. You end up having to tape it to your face.

The most I've ever spent on headphones of any kind, was $500, and that is because as I a DJ I need good headphones. (Part of the mixing technique involves listening to what is on the nightclub speakers, and what is playing in your headphones so you can compair record speeds)

I see $2000 excessive for any application in radios. For that I could buy components to make a super powerful PC. (Unless of course, you aren't talking US dollars)

$2000 would pay for Gen 2 nightvision. $2000 is also more than the value of my 4wd pickup. (Unless of course, you aren't talking US dollars) Deja vu?

But in any case, it's solely up to you. Hell if you want to blow 2 grand on radio gear, that's fine by me. So long as you can still pay the rent afterwards.

Oh, cool, whatever floats your boat man.

Mine ARENT computers by the way. I was into it once but decided that it was just far too geeky and such.

I don't think there is one single thing I would ever spend 2000 on. I don't have anything that I am that passionate about. And I don't have the guts to fling that much money around. (although strangely I have the guts to do nutty things while exploring, go figure)

#1 accessory that you cant live without should be backup power, whether that means another battery pack (which must be charged to be useful) or spare batteries, remember your batteries will die at the most innopurtune time, when you need your radio the most. You carry an extra flashlight or extra batts for your light, so carry backup power for your radio too.

I also am looking for throat mics, was hoping to find some type of modular system where i could use a throat mic, or a standard boom mic, and have the secret service style earpice, it gives much better ability to hear what is goin on you as well as hearing your radio. I for one dont want to give up most of my hearing in 1 ear to hear the radio, that will mess up your ability to figure out where sounds are coming from which is very importnat in exploring.

YES! You should have extra batteries for anything you are using, especially vital equipment such as lighting and radios. Heck, a backup light and radio aren't a bad idea at all! I kind of created a backup flashlight by hacking a bright green LED, resistor, and switch into the empty space inside an HT battery pack, but that's cheating... somehow... I just know it...

I prefer equipment that takes standard batteries, such as AA cells, over that which takes proprietary battery formats. (Which reminds me, I need to look for an AA cell case that fits my nice aging Kenwood TH-77A...)

I think the radio accessory that's done the most towards making life easy was a kick-ass HT antenna. I'm using the biggest, nastiest, most genuinely evil antenna MFJ makes for dual band HTs with a BNC connector on the TH-77A, and rarely ever have to bring it up over low power (300mW). Diamond, I believe, makes a neat little ultra-flexible 18" antenna for the VHF and UHF ham bands, and I believe it could be easily trimmed down for use on GMRS or MURS frequencies (or it might work well enough right out of the box!)
