Ideally something rugged, grippy, lightweight, comfortable, flexible, with lots of support and cushioning. As nothing that amazing exists as far as I know, try to find a shoe that suits the sort of movements you find yourself doing the most. If your landings are awesome or you tend not to jump/fall from heights, a light, flexible, grippy martial arts shoe (Fei Yue's are great) might be the way to go. If like me you like doing climby stuff and occasionally aborting from height, a nice grippy, well padded pair of Merrell's could suit. Really though, stepping out in non-specific footwear isn't the end of the world. Anything that's feels right and you dont mind ruining sooner rather than later is fine.

Yeah, they are super comfy, and they do last for ever. And after a while you get used to feeling like you're training in boots from an early diving suit.

Ive used a couple.

Niki air Pegasus 2007 $110
-waffle grip was sweet until it wore out

Adidas Nova cushion. $60
-really comfortable
-took a bit to get use to
-some grip wore off after first day

I cant decide what one i like better.

The price difference is big though.

asics have worked well for me. Light, long lasting grip and comfortable. Absorb shock well too.

I use a pair of tabi (ninja) boots when I need lots of grip, and running shoes (preferably with cushioning) when I do everything else.

use Converse-type shoes when conditioning since they provide no arch support, cushioning or grip. and therefore train your body (mainly feet) to be stronger and land correctly.

Then I use a pair of jogging shoes for Jams or get togethers. since they provide good grip, balance, arch support, etc.

by the way parkour will wreck your shoes to hell, its just a tip that you have an extra pair for social activities.

I'm curious if anyone has used the Vibram FiveFingers for Parkour? Seems like it would be great but I have no idea.

Feiyues

Good grip on all kinds of surfaces.
Light and flexible
Cheap

It's the only thing I like to use aside from bare feet...

I've heard great things from the people who like to use them. It has been recommended that you progressively work your way down to thinner and thinner soles. I'd get them, but feiyues and barefoot is cheaper...

My buddy had a pair of rock climber shoes that made for some incredible grip. I'm not sure if I would trust the shoes with individual toes, seems to me like it's just asking for a bad toe injury. I've gone barefoot while free-running before and I didn't like how not having a cushioned landing took away from my confidence before any jumps/vaults.

This year I'll be keeping my eyes out for a good pair of rock-climbers.

Also keep your eyes open for "Approach Shoes" - They're made for the hike-climb up to the face, so they are grippy, but have a bit more padding and support than full-on crack-climbing shoes.
