how feasible is this...

How feasible would it be to bike approximately 200 miles in 3-5 days? The terrain would be biking on highways that go over mountains and through rolling plains, has anyone on here done anything like this and what suggestions would you make? If I do do this it would be in spring/summer of 2008.

Also is it a good idea to bike on the shoulder of highways over 2 lane mountain passes? These passes aren't too bad, but would it be too dangerous for me to do?

in some places, most that i've seen, highway biking is illegal. but i can see a person doing it. 200 miles, going say a brisk 10 miles an hour hehe...with the proper stops...sure why not.

I've done a little, but nothing close to 200 miles (even 200kms). Depending on the highway, watch out for cargo trucks. They push, and pull a lot of air, and you can get blown around a lot. Make sure the shoulder is wide enough so you're comfortable with cars and trucks whizzing past you at twice normal city speed.
Use lights, and lots of orange reflective stuff, and use your head (your most important safety equipment) and you should be fine. Don't forget to rehydrate, and refuel often. Let us know how it goes.

When I was racing, I trained, on average, 50+ miles per day, and about 70+ on Sat and Sun if there wasn't a race or it was pre-season. Of course all of those miles were on back roads. So for me, yes, it is very possible. I wasn't carrying any excess weight either, just a few power-gels, water, and some carb-foods. I'm not sure of your fitness level, so put in a lot of base miles in the weeks leading up to your trip, and gradually add weight so you get used to the feel of a loaded bike. I would ask some folks from your local bike shop, or look online, for the safest routes possible. Too many fuckhead drivers out there to not research your trip. Good luck, and enjoy.

I'm planning on biking to St. Louis over Thanksgiving. I don't think I'll be longer than 2 days each way...of course, that's on very very flat terrain. Also depends on what you're carrying.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

just don't forget you have to come back. get enough recovery time before doing the trip all over again in reverse.

Depends on the shape you're in, too. I doubt I, a middle-aged fat dude, could manage as much as some of the others here have said. Also might depend on what kind of bike you've got and how familiar you are with it.

Thanks for the input, after further consideration and looking at mapping a route I don't think this will be very easily done, or if I still want to do it...Maybe a shorter route to some place else.

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop...

I could do 100 miles in 6 or seven hours, so I think it's perfectly feasible...

Its not that far, but I really dont want to go by myself and the route I would take would be challenging as it is a 2 lane highway the whole way without many other detours. A lot of semis use this road also, there might be too much traffic to safely travel this road.

I've thought of doing similar stuff, and planning is key. I learned that after coming across a long four lane bridge without any shoulder and "no pedestrian/cyclist signs". Traffic was heavy at around 90-100 kph with semis. I had to find a detour, and that took a couple of hours.

In the summer I like to do go 40km a day and that takes me 4 hours.. so like yeah a few days ans you'll be there.. just don't fall or wreck your bike..

you could always upgrade your bike so that it's a hybrid.. then you can let the battery do all of the work for a few hours a day and just park it next to a plug at night!

I've seen kits go for like $500

it adds onto your existing bike and is light! (ish)
