I believe that as of today Kodak HIE has been officially discontinued.

If you are interested in trying this unique and beautiful film you should check your local photo store to see if there is still any available. There's still probably some HIE in the distribution system but I doubt it will remain available for long. I have read reports of some hoarders buying 200 or 300 rolls, which seems ridiculous to me as HIE does not keep well at all even in a freezer.

Amazingly, I was lucky enough to get 8 rolls for Christmas and my buddy in Montreal managed to find me 2 more at his local camera shop. I am pretty sure these will be the last 10 rolls of HIE I ever get to use.

It's a sad day for B/W photography.

There are other brands who still make IR film so it's not the end. Of course they will be different than HIE.

The biggest difference between HIE and other infrared films is the lack of an anti-halation backing. As such HIE is (was) the only infrared film currently in production that produced images with what people have come to think of as the characteristic IR glow.

In any case it yet another piece of the B/W photography world that is disappearing into history.

Maco (or whatever they call it now) is also available without an anti-halation backing. The version without is called "aura" (or at least it used to be)

I emailed a couple of places about "aura" and they told me that it's not currently being produced but that it may be again in light of the fact that HIE has been disco'd.
