Lily got lost.

When I woke up today, right when my husband came home, we discovered that Lily had gotten out. The back door was open and I'd gone to bed. She pushed it open and out she went, probably through a hole in the fence. I freaked out, threw on a coat and my husband's shoes and set off to find her. Upon opening the front door, I find Gordon waiting for me. I thought he was in his crate, but he'd gotten out, too.

Begin three hours of walking the neighborhood, calling her name, driving around. I called in reinforcements from my ex-boyfriend and my dad, who both drove about 45 minutes to my neighborhood to help out.

I'm sure I looked like a crazy person, wearing a bright purple coat, pajamas, shoes too big, unshowered, and a face all red from crying. I left my number and Lily's description at a couple of bodegas and a coffee shop in my neighborhood, as well as with several people I saw on the street. My landlord called all her houses to let them know to keep a look out.

Around nine o'clock, I pass my dad in his truck. He says he's going to walk around the house to see if she's lying on the ground asleep or something, then he had to go home because he couldn't see very well anyway. I resigned myself to spending a restless night worrying, and called in Eli and Anthony (husband and ex-boyfriend, respectively).

I park the car and get out. My dad is on the side of the house, shining his flashlight up. I hear him yelling something, in his dog voice. "Daddy, did you find her?!" "I sure as shit did!" I ran over to find my Lily on the roof of the house. No, I'm not joking. My sister's apartment is above my house, and has outside stairs. We're thinking Lily chased a cat up the stairs and onto the roof, then got stuck. All sixty pounds of her dumbass was lying in the rain gutter.

So, if your dog ever gets loose, the moral of this story is to look up.

Awww poor pup! I'm glad you found her though, wow I can only imagine how scared you must've been! Thank goodness!!

Something sorta similar happened to me once quite a few years ago. I have a shore house that's surrounded on 2 sides by a bay, and the bay is kept back by 4 foot walls that are even with the lawn.
Anyway, one day we left my dog Raider tied up in the yard and went to the beach for a little while. When we came back the first thing we noticed was the rope he'd been tied with had been chewed through and was lying next to his doghouse on the ground.

Beings it's only a summer home, we freaked out because we didn't know if he would be able to find his way back, since he didn't know the area and everything smells like ocean anyway. After running around the surrounding streets frantically, we all came back to get the car and drive around looking for him. Suddenly, from the driveway (which has a view of the bay) my dad spots 2 little white paws hanging over the side of the bay wall!!
We rush over to find that Raider had decided to go for a swim, but then couldn't get back up the wall and onto the property. The tide was coming in and there was nothing he could do but paddle to exhaustion, too tired to even bark, so he was on a last ditch effort to save himself! I thank the Lord that we happened to notice his paws instead of driving away to look for him... We probably would've come back to him floating half submerged in the tide, being bashed against the bulkhead with the waves....

Needless to say, we used a chain instead of rope from that day on.

I will remember that.

I'm very glad Lily was found and is safe although I gotta admit, I had a good laugh over this story.
I'll remember to grab the camera before looking for Poppy if she ever gets out. That must've been quite the sight!

How did you get her down?

Thats nuts. Never heard of a dog climbing up onto the roof like that. Although my old Lab (R.I.P. Sally) used to wanna be with me so much she would follow me everywhere...even up the attic ladder. She would crawl up and crash right into my lap.

Glad you found your doggie! I know how you musta felt.

I go through this process at least once every two weeks with Mollie. Every time I think I have found where she is getting out, she makes a new one. Luckily, she has not starting "roofing" buildings yet, but it is very frustrating to walk around the neighbour hood in my pajamas and house shoes looking for the idiotic creature. Caesar!!!! Please help us!! We bought your book and everything!

Show up at 9:30 with 15 dollars cash and your fingers crossed.

Ahh the dog whisperer, my friend in Cali. told me about it before I got Natl. Geo. and I laughed, making fun....."The Dog Whisperer that sounds dumb"

Of course I had to eat my words, once I saw it I was hooked. Dude is a genius, that psssst method works! I havent tried to tame any pit bulls yet though, just my little poodle.

My dad picked her up out of the gutter, where she promptly thanked him by peeing on him. Heh.

Eww!

I'll remember that if Poppy is up in the gutter and wear a rain coat. Or get the fire department to bring her down.

Glad to hear Lily is okay.

Last summer I helped a neighbour who lives across the street in a small apartment building try to find his cat. The window was left open and the cat had slid the screen across and jumped down to the balcony where we had thought he had then continued down to the parking lot and off on an adventure. After a long time of searching the park, shrubs, bushes, under cars, EVERYWHERE! we finally hear a "meow" and looked up.
The cat had not jumped down to the owners balcony but up to the balcony above and was lying there in the sun watching us run around trying to find him.
The neighbour above was not home so out came the ladders and Bobby was "rescued"

The feeling of knowing your pet is outside and possibly in danger is horrible.

I am so glad Lily was safe.

I used to have a dog that was known in the neighborhood as an escape artist. He could get out of literally any enclosure I put him in. Somehow he could get off of a chain that *I* had trouble undoing, climb over a six-foot plus privacy fence, and just go wherever the heck he wanted.

I miss him. I am really glad that Lily is OK.
