I have been on UER almost 5 years and I never noticed this board until a couple of weeks ago. Anyways, I am very intrigued in this topic and have seen things that have at least convinced me that there might be something to the concept of hauntings, the supernatural and even the paranormal. In my own experience, I have been through situations that could only be described by 'what the fuck?' and at best nervously chuckled away for reuse in the nightmare files.

For the longest time, I was a magnet for the strange, almost like my body reverberated at the right frequency for strange things to find me. I'll get to what I mean later on...

I spent the first thirteen years of my life in a house that was most certainly haunted. By haunted I mean that lights would turn on by themselves, faucets would turn on and off, stray footsteps on parts of the house where no one was... on and on down the list. In all of these occurances, there was no malice, nothing at all violent. Just a playful reminder that it was not our house, but the former residents'!

I'm not sure if this board is comfortable with covering the world of the paranomal, by paranormal, I mean the other chapters in the Big Book of Weird. Things like Bigfoot, UFO's... the like.

Anyways, it's good to be here and I hope we can have some pretty good discussions.

Well, I mostly created it as a refuge for discussions about the supernatural -- not to eliminate people who oppose believing in ghosts and hauntings, but to reduce the number of posts by people who think it's their duty to complain that "this stupid thread is in Main" over and over. If you come here you may believe or not, but you're open to discussion.

That said, I don't know of another board that truly supports discussion of the paranormal in general. There's the urban legends board, but that doesn't seem to be the appropriate place. So I'm fine with bringing in cryptozoology, UFOs (though I'd prefer personal experiences to stories about Area 51 and the like -- those will not be allowed), and other paranormal phenomena. If you have a tale to tell, then don't hold back.

It's kind of ironic, Oherian, that i live in the northeastern capitol for cryptozoology. The Town of Moriah, New York is home to the Lake Champlain Monster, affectionately known as "Champ".

Samurai, did you ever find out who was haunting your house? I lived in a house similar to yours when I was 12-13,the same type of things happened there, though the very odd time I would see her as well. She was a teenage girl wearing a filthy dress and no shoes.

we always assumed it was the previous owners, the builders of the house. They were very short German immigrants that had come to New York in the mid 30's fleeing Hitler. The area where I grew up had been known as Germantown in the dim distant past. You'd be walking through the woods and there would be foundations, garbage dumps, stuff to let you know that people had been there. The subsequent residents of the place, most notably the ones that bought the house after we moved in 1987 or 88, noticed the haunting and never let it bother them. The playfulness of the haunting continued.
I have yet to talk with the current owners as they are snooty downstaters.

It's kind of ironic...I live in Sam's grandparents old house, his grandfather haunts this house.
He unlocks and opens my windows in the middle of winter. It's been happening since I moved in 11 years ago.

I live about 45 minutes away from where the "Mothman" was seen, so I'm not too far from a hotbed of cryptozoology myself. And as far as UFOs go, WV was the site of the "Flatwoods Monster" -- a close encounter tale that used to give me the creeps when I was younger.

inetersting... I've never heard of that one! I'll have to look it up. I'm more familiar with Kecksburg, Rensselear, and the RAF Bentwaters (East Anglia, UK) incidents. I know a man who witnessed the Rensselear, IN incident --> teacher at my school.

If anyone knows anybody in the Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana tri-state area that needs paranormal assistance, let me know. I've got a small investigation group now called SOPER, Southwest Ohio Paranormal Exploration and Research.

Interesting ... it's appeared in popular media more than I would have expected. The incident is described as one of the most sinister UFO encounters to date. The debunking section of the article draws too heavily from the work of one man, some of whose conclusions are a little far-fetched in my opinion (i.e. he stretches the bounds of reason in trying to find a way it could be nothing).

I had promised an explanation about what I meant by being magnet for the weird, but forgot all about it... that happens when you get older.

Anyways, when I was a kid, i lived on a pretty remote road. In fact, my house was the last house on the pavement as it went to dirt just past my driveway. My house also sat on 65 acres of land that backed up on to the Blue Line. The Blue Line is the border for the Adirondack Park in northern New York, a social and ecological experiment started by the New York State legislature in 1892 to allow people to live in a wilderness preserve. It's basically the largest park in America, over 7 million acres of public and private lands and the majority of it is ridiculous wilderness, I mean hardcore lose-your-shit-here-and-you'll-die wilderness! So, it was not unusual to have all manners of wildlife in the backyard or trying to get to the garbage in the garage... (My dad went nose to muzzle with a black bear one night in the garage!)

Anyways, there were woods and meadows to play in all the time. My cousin Jeff had come up for a visit one early spring day and we had decided to take a walk into the back meadow and see how the logging was progressing. In reality, we were going to try and hotwire a skidder and take it for a ride (A skidder is a wicked overgrown post-apocalyptic tractor like contraption for skidding logs on a logging header [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skidder]). So, off we trudge. It was about 1/2 a mile from the house and over a hill to where the logging header was. The day was warm and rainy, so there was a fog coming off what was left of the snow. A the time, I was 13 and wasn't afraid of the woods. I had been playing in them since I was old enough to wander into them. But just as we got to the treeline, I stopped. Dead. Right in my tracks. Jeff turns around and he's got a weird look on his face too. Maybe 90 feet into the header, there was an overturned tree, it's root system was huge. You could've hid a fair-sized car behind it. As I stood there, my guts went cold. It was the first time I had ever felt 'fear'.
"there's something behind that tree, isn't there?"
"Yeah."
and then it whatever it was moved- FAST. It was a black blur into the brush. I heard a twig snap and the blur moved into the brush at the edge of the meadow and stopped. It was huge and in the fog, it was breathing (for lack of a better term). That was it for Jeff and I. We turned and beat feet as fast as we good, which must've been hysterically funny to any bystander as our Nike's couldn't get traction in the snow... (we were too cool for rubber boots, mang... had a junior high rep to protect). Told my mom what we had seen and she had just dismissed it as my imagination running off... and that was the end of it. I filed it away and it was forgotten.

But, in 1988, again, something weird hit me... and ironically, Jeff, again! It was a saturday night in June. We were sitting around my friend Richies' house bored, looking for a place to happen... As much as you can do when you're 15. Our informant, Richies brother Bob, had told us that the middle brother, John, was banging this tasty chick over on the old railroad tracks and had a bottle of vodka handy... we figured that while John was distracted, we'd swipe the bottle and maybe get some beer later in the evening. A plan was formed and off we went... we headed into the woods and started down the tracks... These tracks were part of the old Lake Champlain and Moriah Railroad and run between Elizabeth Street and another street... at that point in 1988, the part nearest the highway was a Subaru lot so there were a couple of junk cars back in the woods... So there we are, Richie, Jeff and myself, jandering down the railbed looking for John and more importantly, his bottle of liquor when we heard this godawful screaming and the sounds of heavy metal being shredded. So, duh, we stopped and I'm pretty it was Richie that said the fateful words, "What the fuck is that?"
No sooner than it popped out of his mouth, but it stopped and everything went dead quiet. I mean DEAD quiet, almost as if everything around us had been shut off or had the volume turned down... and then it screamed again and started plowing through the underbrush. By the sound of it, in the dark, it sounded like whatever was coming towards the railbed was knocking trees over! It got to the bottom of the embankment, screamed again and came up the bank in like jumps. Keep in mind, this embankment was loose gravel, viny underbrush and shitty bushes, stuff you can't climb instantly. And then it was right there, three feet from us... Richie and Jeff had had enough and had taken off as it was halfway up the embankment. At that point, we were about 200 feet from the old rail bridge and the highway. They left me to die, those bastards so there I am nose to nose with this nasty-smelling, HUGE fucking thing... Close enough where it's nasty breath was in my face. What did it smell like? Mix a bog, garbage, skunk, shitty diarhetic swamp ass and nasty four day old-been-in-90-degree-feet smell and you'd still be off a little.
At that point, I turned to run and this thing screamed again. It was, well, undescribable... stuff a baby in a blender, throw in a bobcat screaming and you'd still be off a whole bunch. So, with this soundtrack in mind, I am running my little ass off for the highway. And this thing is keeping pace... it's chasing me!!! In those seconds, every monster movie i had ever seen ran through my mind and i was screaming like a little girl as I headed for the highway. This thing was close enough where I could feel each huge THUD of it's feet on the old trackbed... I came down the little path off the embankment at a dead fucking gallop and took a header right into the road... I tripped at the sidewalk and landed right around the center line! I rolled over, flipped to my feet ninja style and started to run again... I looked back and it had stopped just inside the shadows from the street light at the bottom of the path. I looked up the road and my friends were still booking it for Richies house. (they were going to DIE when I got ahold of them those fuckers!!!!!!). So we explode into Richies house and his mother was sitting at the kitchen table watching a movie, i think... Richies mom, at the time, was working at a Job corps in Vermont, had raised three rambunctious sons and one daughter so she had seen it all twice and was pretty much unflappable. She looks up from the tv and asks the obvious, "Been running from the cops?"
And we start babbling all at once, "something"... "woods"... "chased us"..."monster"... "screaming"... so she piles us into her car and we head back down there(!!!!!!!). Yeah, we're rocking weaponry this time, bitches... I had a hammer, Jeff a tire iron and Richie a shotgun (that wasn't loaded). Scooby-Doo eat your fucking heart out. We, of course, didn't see anything but dark woods. And that was the end of it and I headed to an Upward Bound program at SUNY Plattsburgh. A week later, my friends and I went back into the woods just looking for any signs of the fantastic tale, which really hadn't gotten around, which for a small town like mine, was pretty odd. Remember those old cars I had mentioned? One of them was an early 60's Chevy station wagon, a big, heavy old car... when last we had seen it, it had been in one piece, on what was left of its tires and gently rusting away into the ground. However on this visit, something terrible had befallen this american icon... the car was on its roof, pieces of the car had been ripped off of it and thrown everywhere. It looked like a really big kid had gotten pissed and done the truffle shuffle all over this thing! There was a path of destruction from the car directly to the embankment and a 'sort of' path where something had gone up the bank, but now feetprints... So you tell me what we saw? About a year ago, I happened to have Jeff and Richie in the same room at a wedding and the whole thing came up again... why is that odd? Well, Jeff, Richie and myself have done our fair share of living since 1988, and that includes our fair share of self-medication and illicit substance abuse.

About 5 years later, again, back road, something chased my friend Matt and I in his wagon only this time, friends and neighbors, I got a really good look at whatever it was... It wasn't wearing a nametag, and I'm no cryptozoologist, but it sure as fuck fit the bill for Sasquatch.

Since this has turned into an EPIC fucking post, I'll save that encounter for later...

damn bro... that scream you were talkin about sounds curiously a LOT like the scream I heard in Warren County, PA a few years back...

I was on a hunting trip with a bunch of our huntin buddies (one of which owns a cabbin there in Warren Co. (NE part of PA, not toooooo far from Erie) called The Gypsy Lodge). Well about the second night of the trip, me and my dad walk out the front door of the cabbin and off the side of the porch to piss before bed... I'd say it was around 12:30am. Now this cabbin sits about 300' off the road in the woods, and the road proceeds down about a mile past the cabbin before a T-intersection. go left there, and take the next left off THAT road and you're at the farm we hunted on... (big square U shape direction on the road)...
So we're out peein' in the trees when we suddenly hear this blood-curdling, piercing shriek from far off, right in from of us -- the exact direction of the hunting farm... scared the piss outta me and dad (quite litterally!).
Next evening, all us boys drove out to the farm to go out for the evening hunt in our treestands, and we decided to park our vehicles all together, just off the road next to some inhabited houses, b/c we had heard of some cult activity in the area... low-and-behold, as we sat in our trees that night we heard chanting coming from the direction of our cars... WICKED wierd! luckily, nothing happened to the cars, but to this day none of us (including pot-head 50-something year old farmer Rick) have been able to explain what was going on there...

That was one of two times that I've felt genuine fear... and like Samurai, I'll save that one for later!

-Cody
