| | | I had one when i was going to automotive school (not the red one). Well, we were tinkering with it in front of the bay doors one day, when an old guy came across the street from the warehouse of the Porsche/Audi headquarters to have a look. So he looks things over, makes a few comments, and in his thick German accent says "There is something in the warehouse you would probably be interested in!!" He leads us to a dusty, tarp covered crate just inside the door and proceeds to uncover it. There, in all it's splendor, was a Porsche, full competition, multi-Webbered, twin cammed, AN fitted 4cyl Jewel!!! apparently, some schmo ordered it years ago, paid for the majority of it, but then just dropped off the face of the Earth. BUUTTTTT...the really cool thing was that he told us that, that engine would of been a drop in for the Lada!!!!! Something about the Lada used a Fiat engine, and the Fiat was actually designed by Porsche, based on this 4cyl. I think he said a 916(?), but pretty much everything he said after "bolt in" was pretty much lost to the pulsing sound in my ears, the sweaty palms and the adrenaline rush i was getting!!!! Unfortunately, the paltry $10000 left to pay was waaayyyy out of reach for a College student! lol! Can you imagine the look on drivers faces as i would blow by them in that shoebox!!!! Btw, the car kinda looked like this, without the flames, but with Monza wheels and blacked out windows.

| | | Porsche 914 = Volkswagen (It was sold as a VW in Europe, engine was based on VW Microbus, with 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 liter versions available. Mid engined, targa roof. Porsche 914-6 - Porsche 914 with 2.0 liter flat six from Porsche 911.
Porsche 916- Hardtop prototype of the 914 with a 6 cyl engine. If this guy had a 916, it's worth a few hundred grand. Porsche 924 = Originally SUPPOSED to be a Volkswagen... ended up being a Porsche, and early models had an Audi engine. Front engined, transaxle in rear. Porsche 928 = All Porsche... not intended to be a VW at any time. Front engine, transaxle in rear.
I wonder if the man who looked at your Lada was thinking Skoda? I've never heard of a Porsche engine fitting in a Lada, but I could definitely be wrong. Skoda used a rear engined, air cooled flat four, and looked pretty similar to the Lada. Fiat and VW/Porsche have no association at all, but VW owns Skoda.
And on the Lada note... last year I was coming back from Toronto on the 401, doing about 140-150 km/h. A red Lada, same body style as the one in the pic below blasts past me like I was in reverse. Turns out the guy had a turbo 13B rotary engine in it... NICE SLEEPER!
