| | | I think it's the victim mentality going on here where kids are thinking like their parents, the world owes me because I've been hurt and if my parents say or do anything to try to discipline me that I don't like, I'll just scream abuse at the top of my lungs. That's what the past 30 years of self help and therapy has basically made this world into. Some people actually need help, but this stuff is almost making people who are perfectly normal believe they've been victimized by everyone and everything. It's not the idea that I'm against having kids, it's just never been something that I saw happening to me. God knows I didn't see Samurai coming into my life either, so who knows what'll happen next week, next month or next year. But for now, things are fine, other than the fact I'm still living with my parents when I'd rather be living with Sam, but that can be easily fixed. My cousin's kids are a prime example of what you're talking about though, undisciplined and rude for the most part because my cousin is scared to death that they'll scream child abuse. Shael

| | | Posted by David Dong I think that maybe MAYBE I would not be so dammed anti-child if parents started acting like parents for a change. In my day if a kid acted bad in public, they got a public ass stompin'. Kids only understand two things; pain and fear. Not a day goes by that I dont feel thankful for all of the ass whoopings that I received from my parents when I was a kid. I know how to act in public because of them. These days, if you smack your kid for mouthing off to a teacher; the teacher will call DHHR on you and you get arrested. And we wonder why our kids are out of control? Discuss
| I was never hit....or grounded....neither were my siblings. They all turned out great. We never got in trouble. I think you only NEED the physical whoopings if the kids KEEP getting out of line after they are told not to do something. We were never spanked, either. Some kids need it, some don't. Environment has a lot to do with that....imagine a couple of scenarios. 1. Good kid, never does anything bad, is not corporally punished. Siblings grow up with good kid, also take after, and all is well. They respond to verbal warnings. Imagine if someone starts mouthing off or does not respond to them anymore. Then corporal punishment would REALLY scare the kid LOL. 2. Kid is only child and spanked from day one. This is normal to the kid. Almost expects it.....this can be bad if not given a chance to respond to verbal warnings. Parents need to be good about the amount for the "crime" LOL. This method still produces great kids. So who cares. As long as other people's kids don't bother me I'm fine. L

| | | Sorry for posting late, Sara just added me to the board. There was a study done that I read a few months ago about how during the 80's there was a large push in the education system/parenting to teach kids that they were "special" and as a result of that now we have a generation of narcissists who feel entitled and that they are the most special snowflake so the universe must revolve around them. I can't find the original article that I read but I found a few others that people might like to read and start fearing for the future. One of the sad things is that one article actually tries to blame Mr. Rogers for being the reason why so many American kids today think that they are gods gift to the world. I dont think Rogers was any more responsible for you thinking you're a self centered ego maniac than if you happened to watch Halloween and 30 years later killed your neighbors. Its all about parenting and this is sadly another attempt at passing the buck. If Mr. Rogers was the reason your kid became like this, maybe you shouldn't have let your kid watch it. Before this report came out there would have been very little negative talk against Mr. Rogers but now people are probably quick to jump on a group trying to ban his show from PBS. How about instead of blaming movies/tv/music/video games you do some parenting? Maybe your kid thinks he's God because you gave him a Super Sweet 16 on MTV worth more than most peoples homes, bought him 20 ponies until he found the right one, or whatever else he demanded. But of course not, its Mr. Rogers fault. Damn him trying to parent your kids while you were too lazy to discipline or set some rules up for you children. I understand a lot of parents have to work and thus watching PBS is something they need to put on to keep the kids entertained, at least its better than MTV or Nick, but don't cop out years later and try and blame it like you were innocent in all of it. You could have given the kid a book, hopefully one of those banned books that would make the school and Sunday school class freak out. Sorry, I really didn't intend to make this a rant but I just really hate parenting in the US for the most part.
