Okay. so i thought i knew everything about film SLRs before i went out and shot a roll of film. i went on a weeklong adventure all over the place and took pictures. when i rewound the film, i forgot to release it first, and broke the film. oops. at least it seems to have not broken so badly, what i am pissed about is that i tried to retrieve the rewound film cartridge and i accidentally exposed the half of a roll that was broken off. scans of it tomorrow, after i develop it today and let it dry.

So what you're saying is less that you hate manual cameras and more that you were dumb and forced something too hard when you shouldn't?

What ETMJ said.

Next time, when you know the film will be exposed, handle it in the dark.

With manual camera's it's always the same, if you have to put too much force on it you are doing something wrong.

Exactly! I found that out the hard way with my Hi-Matic 7s (My first camera). I broke the film, then the back popped open when I pull up on the rewind spinner, and ruined the film.

I then went online and found the manual for the camera.

no one said they didn't. but no one claimed to know everything then proceeded to fail

lesson learned: everyone fails, no one knows everything

Actually, I usually don't get the film caught all the way on the take up reel.
I take the most amazing photos before I realize the film isn't even advancing.

manual cameras are less confusing for me than digital ones. there are some basic rules like don't force anything. if it feels like you're having to push something too hard, stop because you are pushing it too hard.

it took me a while to figure things out too, and i did break a couple rolls of film before i found the release button. but overall things are easier.

the way i see it is that with film photography, you are most limited by your equipment (lenses, other accessories) and your imagination. digital, you're limited by your camera, your imagination, and your editing software.

I almost did that once cuz i hadn't used one in years. but i remembered if it feels tight you have to push a button, eventually i remembered....

i make corrections as needed when i work with film: boosting contrast, lowering contrast, burning, dodging, color correction (with color film obviously), etc in a darkroom. it's not that hard. what i don't do is manipulate my pictures to the point that they no longer resemble the original picture, which a lot of people do with digital.

i also think i prefer film because it's something i can feel when i work with it and i'm generally a pretty tactile person.
