While they wont utilize the existing subway tunnels, ghostbuster tunnel, or downtown bus terminal beneath fort washington way....it is at least a step in the right direction as today the city council approved a street car system for the city:

http://news.enquir...3/NEWS01/304230084

The original subway was designed with the intention that traditional subway cars could be used on the lines along with the interurban rail cars. 81 years after the subway as abandoned, maybe we are finally one step closer to getting light rail.

They still need to cough up $65 million in private financing.

For all of your Cincinnati streetcar and light rail wet dreams --

I think there will be a good deal of the $65 million in private funding found. I don't know if they will be able to get all of it though.

I don't know if I think this street car is that good of an idea, and I live uptown. I'm currently doing some design charettes with the OTR Foundation, and really believe that the neighborhood is moving in the right direction, but the corridor along Vine St. really needs to see some improvement; it is frequented by a really rowdy crowd at all hours of the day and night. A street car might make the place more hospital to outsiders, and it might not. It's a tough choice.

Love, love, love this idea. When light rail failed back in 03? I was bummed. We had read Bruno Latour's "Aramis, or the love of technology" about a failed transit system in Paris and I was hoping beyond hope Cincinnati was smart enough not to suffer the same fate. I hope it works out.

You betcha
