| | | Future UE alert? Final decision made on Newtonville PS fate NEWTONVILLE -- A public school which has stood empty for the past academic year in Newtonville will officially close. Students who had attended the school had been dispersed to Newcastle or Orono public schools for this academic year, after it became clear keeping Newtonville Public School open would mean placing all 46 of the school's students in triple grades. Even before the school closed, some students found themselves in tripe grades, said a report to the school board. Closing the school wasn't an easy decision, but it was the best one, said Diane Lloyd, chairwoman of the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. "Together with members of the community, we took the time to discuss the local challenges facing Newtonville (Public School) and will move forward with the recommended closure," she said. "School closures are not decisions we make comfortably, but rather, must be done on the basis of improving student opportunities and programming." As part of the decision, Newcastle Public School's boundaries have now been changed to include the areas formerly within the Newtonville catchment area. As well, funding was provided to Newcastle and Orono public schools, to help pay some of the costs associated with taking on students from the closed school. The board also decided not to do anything with the building for at least six months. |

| | | Vandals hit closed school Wedesday, July 30, 2008 NEWTONVILLE -- Vandals broke windows, set off a fire extinguisher and splashed paint around last weekend after breaking into the building that used to house Newtonville Public School. "It was certainly a mess," Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board spokeswoman Judy Malfara said. No damage estimate is available. There were also some items smashed, but because the school has been closed for the past year, "anything really valuable had been moved," Ms. Malfara said. Police are investigating. |
