He accomplished nothing of any great value..

The man was a fucking hypocrite..
In all irony, The guy wanted out of the Limelight, So he goes and blows his head off. Thus, Making him even MORE famous...

I hate how people hold him up as a rock god..
The man's lyrics sucked, His guitar riffs were easy...

agreed.
i always thought he was a hack and Nirvana sucked.
I still think Nirvana sucks and the only good song they did was an unplugged cover of a meat puppets song.

I agree that people can go overboard with their adulation of him, but for someone like myself who was coming of age at the time of Nevermind, I can't dismiss his impact he had on my own life.

I know how annoying it is when older generations force their shit on you though. When I was your age (I can't believe I just wrote that), I had to deal with all the crap 60s and 70s icons that baby boomers held so dearly. It was fucking awful.

As for Nirvana's riffs being "easy", I think you're missing the point. You're forgetting that they entered the scene when the closest thing to rock on the charts was self-indulgent wank like Poison. You might've heard R.E.M. on the radio now and again, but that was about as "different" as things got. Nirvana was basically a kick in the cock to all of that and whether or not you like their music, their influence (for better or worse) can't be overstated.

Micro, i'll give you a yes and no on that... there was so much great music that was tossed by the wayside when Nirvana really made their presence felt in 1991. In all honesty, there were bands that were 1000 times better than Nirvana from the same genre that got absolutely no play. Nirvana was like a fuzzier, more introspective "Ramones" doing the same thing that they Ramones did years before. They were merely performing the same mission that the Ramones had, the Sex Pistols had...

I don't think that Nirvana should be as hyped as some weenies do.

Yeah, if the "what are you listening to now?" thread is any indication, I think you and I just have different tastes in music. Of course there were better bands at the time who received less attention (the Pixies come to mind), but I think that's always going to be the case. Come to think of it, I'm glad that's the case, because I'd hate to see my favourite bands reach the level of stardom as Nirvana. It'd most likely just result in them making shitty music.

I don't think you can really compare them to the Ramones or the Pistols though other than the fact that they shared some of the same punk energy. The who-did-what-first game a pretty pointless one to play though. If you want to go that route, the Pistols weren't doing anything that what the Stooges weren't doing years before, and the Stooges weren't doing anything countless garage bands were doing before that, and those garage bands weren't.. well, you get the picture. The point is, they all just did things in a slightly different way than their predecessors. It's the way any genre of music evolves.

It's not his riffs persay that piss me off. It's people who believe he was the equivalent of Jimi Hendix or Angus young or even Jimmy Page.

I am just sick of Him and Nirvana being shoved in my face.
Yes, They were the most popular band of the grunge era, But that doesnt mean they were the best.

i see your point (I'm still a little asleep- worked 11-7 last night) and yes, my tastes in music run to the eclectic. Many of the things that you guys listen to, i've never heard of. In 1991, I was in my first semester of college and was being exposed to so much music I hadn't heard of before. I took to Ministry with a fury and yes, I ran out and bought Nevermind when it came out because i had heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" over and over...

ok ok, we won't play the 'who was here first' card, but it just seemed like Nirvana was using that same punk energy with something else, almost a pre-emo hopeless that would look out of place even on a heroin addict. I think the closest thing to that was maybe The Doors.

I was more partial to Soul Asylum and Midnight Oil during that period.

Brad Delp? It was bands like Boston that made Nirvana necessary in the first place.

But yeah.. comparing Cobain to the three guitarists you mentioned is a bit much. Like comparing apples and oranges. Not that apples are better than oranges, it just depends on what you like. My favourite guitarists have technical skills that would make any Jimmy Page fan cringe, but imo.. technical skills are only one part of the equation.

there are so many great guitarists out there.

Joe Satriani

Nirvana were essentially the Stooges or MC5 mixed with R.E.M. I didn't mind the introspective/sensitive side of their stuff though. I think it was honest, especially since it was done before PMS (poor me syndrome) became so fashionable. Cobain contradicted himself a lot, but I really don't think he was a fraud.

Yeah, we're definitely not on the same page then because that sounds like the starting line-up for Rock Hell. I'm just not a fan of guitarists who jizz all over my face with their technical prowess. Neil Young is about as much classic rock wank as I can handle and even then.. four minutes into Cortez the Killer and I'm hitting the skip button. I mean, f'ing enough already!
