Yeah, we're definitely not on the same page then because that sounds like the starting line-up for Rock Hell. I'm just not a fan of guitarists who jizz all over my face with their technical prowess. Neil Young is about as much classic rock wank as I can handle and even then.. four minutes into Cortez the Killer and I'm hitting the skip button. I mean, f'ing enough already!

oh Micro!!
next time I am in Montreal, i'm handcuffing you to a chair and making you listen to Vinnie Moore- Time Odyssey at full volume and then continuing the "Clockwork Orange" programming with Joe Satriani- Surfing With The Alien.

(Alan Holdsworth is a jazz fusion instrumentalist that I really admire for his technique)

Wow, I was never able to put that feeling into words before, but you have captured it eloquently.

Heh, as if if jazz wasn't bad enough on its own, they had to go and make jazz fusion. A friend of mine's always trying to get me to listen to stuff that falls into that category. Not surprisingly, he hates Nirvana too.

Dude, Kurt isn't dead, I saw him last week at a Faun Fables show. The jury is still out on El Duce though. Rape Rock Rules.

It is all about your taste.... if we all liked the same music, the world would be very boring.

I love Nirvana, but with Kurt's death, the band is finished. I don't hold him up as a rock god, there are no rock gods. I liked his music, I still listen to his music, and he is still dead. Simple.

It made money. LOTS of it.

As much as I may hate to admit it, it is not about what I like...It's about what makes the money.

you're talking El Duce, right?

Edit:

Sleep Bandits lyrics

We´re creepy crawlin´ through the night
We´re lookin´ for some pussy good and tight
Hopefully you will be drunk and asleep
For us to sink our dicks in deep
Little Betty wasn´t too frisky
When she passed out from the whiskey
Then we gave her knock-out pills
To help us get out thrills
Now she´s conked out from whiskey and wine
it´s time for us to form a line
She was passed out and stripped in bed
We knew that she would give us some head
We´re the sleep bandits, can you stand it
We´re the sleep bandits, can you stand it
I´m a sleep bandit, can you stand it
Sleep bandit, can you stand it

I disagree!!!

Nirvana's music is a mix of 'punk' sound and pop. That's it. The riffs are extremely simple and catchy. Everything's a hook in the songs, especially Nevermind. Then he just tacks on lyrics that drive him, and there ya go, a song. It just so happened that when he wanted to make a more pop album, many kids were extremely sick of the processed rock crap at the time. Nevermind hit at just the perfect time with the perfect audience, for the perfect storm. A guitarist who hates the limelight, and swarming fans. He did everything he could from that point on to try and turn down the spotlight, and it all backfired (in utero is a noisy album, live unplugged was meant [by kurt] to turn off the audience, etc.). He wasn't a good guitarist... he liked the 3 chord form and single plucks with a major amount of feedback. Half of his 'solos' just mimic his lyrics, random noise, or a weak attempt at technique. His voice was great sounding, as it was really really precise, but a huge amount of gargle and rasp.

As far as the suicide goes... to me it's still up in the air. 80/20 percent it was suicide/murder I say, but I'd still like it reopened.

Personally, I really like Nirvana. But I suggest you listen to their live stuff or homebrew albums... I think it's much better than the stuff made in the studios.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been another band to come along and break this processed pop/emo/nu metal shit from all over.

Nirvana, led by Cobain, changed the existing musical tableau with one song. Once the band broke with Nevermind, the entire industry machine changed gears. Popular music was never the same after that.

I can thank Nirvana for killing Axle Rose, Bret Michaels, and every other fruitcake bleach blond shrieking spandex-wearing pouty-faced motherfucker who somehow managed to carve out a career as a 'recording artist.' And that includes Metallica.

personally, I'm not that keen on Teen Spirit... but it has it's moments as well. Lithium, on the other hand, has a great sound, and the lyrics hit really close to home for me...

Metallica killed themselves. I enjoy their music too (especially Justice), but the band's attitude changed, the music changed, but the fans didn't.... hence the fall from supreme glory, to the constant longing of "the good ol' days"

I liked Nirvana. I really did. I mean I don't have a shrine to Kurt in my closet but I enjoyed his music. Many rockers get overrated just because the died, such as Joplin, Elvis, and Hendrix. You could argue that Elvis built his fame before his death and you would be right, but he wouldn't be the legend he is now if he had lived to an old age and died quietly in his bed at 85. Some of em, the best thing that ever happened to their record sales was their death.
