LOL at Dell

I bought a Dell (Lexmark) M5200N network laser printers for dirt cheap (60$ each, yay for corporate surplus). It only printed 8700 pages and the toner is 80% full. The office installed a dozen of them and they work great. So I got one for home.

I log on the Dell website to get the drivers. My desktops runs Vista Home Premium x64. To my surprise, there were no drivers for Vista or XP x64. So I download the 32bit Vista drivers. Installation is smooth as butter. Everything works. Sweet.

Next I install the drivers on my laptop running XP SP3. I once again download the appropriate drivers for XP. I launch the install app, and within 5 seconds get an error message : Your operating system is not compatible. I download the app again, thinking I might of downloaded the vista drivers by mistake, same thing. I get the same error on my other XP SP3 boxes.

I just think it's funny that a 32bit driver works just fine on my 64bit system, but I can't get the stupid XP driver to install on SP3.

i havent had any major league problems with it. it wrecked my install of syleXP. no matter really, its pretty easy to get a sp3 version of uxtheme.dll. i think some software disagreement is pretty normal for any service pack update with windows.

ive never heard of any serious problems with network printers -- but my experiences have been mainly with HP network printers and/or JetDirect modules.

Yeah HP jetdirect is fucking amazing. Ive actually used the external cards to interface other printers that were already network-enabled, because their integrated cards sucked so hard
