WHMIS (or Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) - pronounced "WIMISS" - is Canada's national hazard communication program for hazardous workplace chemicals.Created in 1988, WHMIS was developed through a well-established consensus process in partnership between Canada's federal, provincial governments, as well as with the Canadian industry and organized labour. Starting in 2008, the WHMIS is being modified to conform to the Globally Harmonized System.

These WHIMS symbols can be found on anything for Building and storage doors to Jars and large containers. There are six classes of WHIMS hazards (With class D being separated into D-1 Materials causing immediate and serious toxic effects, D-2 Materials causing other toxic effects and D-3 Biohazardous infectious material.)

NOTE:The triangle, diamond & octagon are associated with CCCR labels (Canadian Consumer & Chemical Regulations). The WHMIS symbols are always in circles (WHMIS is for the WORKPLACE). CCCR label instructions and requirements are stricter than WHMIS.

Class B

Class D-1
