I thought I would get this train a rolling again. I have a Mamiya C220 and although we are close, I am thinking I need an slr. There have been numerous occasions where I forget to compensate. Here is an example...

As you can imagine, I was expecting the image to be a bit higher.

The issue is that I don't have enough money to drop on a Hasselblad and all my medium format cameras have been Mamiyas. I see Bronicas are cheap, but I have no experience with them. Any suggestions?

Bronica glass is excellent, I have no hesitation recommending one of their systems. Do you want 645, 6x6, or 6x7?

6x6. So, that is one vote for a Bronica. I think, from what little research I have done, the SQ line is 6x6. Are there any duds in that line?

Arg! Paralax. . . Has happened to the best of us. Twin lens reflex does have its advantages though.

There's some I really would recommend, I constantly scour ebay for great deals and I used to work in a camera shop.

PM me if you want some advice, give me an idea what your willing to spend and what you expect to need.

There are some WICKED deals coming up on MF SLR's Im watching right now.

I will message you back some sweetheart deals, not going to post here, or they wont be good deals anymore.

At least if we do communicate about this we wont be outbidding each other ;o)

The SQ line is fantastic, but it is battery operated. The SQ-Ai would be the one to get, mostly because of its bulb mode changes vs the SQ-A. If you want fully manual, the S2 (or S2A) would be your pick. The S2 is much harder to find (I used to own one), and lenses are as hard to find. Commercial Camera Repair on Church has a few SQ-Ai's in great shape right now.

If you want to stick with a TLR, you could always just get the C330 which has the parallax indicator.

I did not know that about the C330.

I don't know that I would not use my C220 anymore, so I was kinda hoping for something different (aka an slr). For some reason the Mamiya 6 doesn't appeal to me (for the price it is at).

I just have decided that I really am liking the 6x6 format, but I find my C220 frustrating to use. To be honest this is for more reasons than the one I listed.

I kinda want a Hasslblad, but I just don't know that I can justify the cost. I guess I consider it a camera for professionals and I almost think it would be too cocky of myself to think I needed anything that fancy.

On the other hand, I have never heard a peep about Bronica. Nothing negative is said, but nothing positive is said either. It is like it doesn't exist, which makes me nervous. Here is one example http://photo.net/p...um-format/choosing

Bronica is great if you want more than one lens. Hasselblad is great if you only one one lens (because, boy, they are expensive!)

As for the quality of these lenses, a writer for the British magazine Photo Technique compared a Bronica SQ-Ai with the 80/2.8 PS to a Hasselblad 503CW with the Zeiss 80/2.8 Planar, and concluded, "If I mix the results up on the lightbox I can't tell them apart."

One advantage, though, with Hasselblad is that you'd be able to rent lots of lenses from Headshots or Vistek. No one rents Bronica lenses that I've found (but you can find them cheap enough to just buy them sometimes).

Yeah, the lenses can get pricey. The old chromes ones are pretty reasonable though and in a lot of cases they're just as sharp. They're just a bit more prone to flaring.

I am actually not a renter (other than my apartment). Not for any political stance, I just don't like having to go out of my way to return things. I had problems returning items to the library and it is less than a block from my house!

I am still torn. How are the Bronica lenses with flare? I hate flare! How come the opinionated micro hasn't commented on the Bronicas and where the hell is mortimer?

I think Ryan has a Bronica 645?

Here are a couple of mine from the S2A days.

No flare

Flare

This wasn't one of the PE lenses, which I believe have better flare suppressison coating.

Yokes, you almost had me convinced, but then I read that the Bronica SQas don't have bulb mode! What gives? I can't have a camera without bulb. This is all so terribly complicated.

you should get the bronica ERT-Si body

it's a smaller 645, easy to use, similar and has bulb

Thanks, but I already have a Mamiya 645. I am currently focused on a new 6x6, though if anyone knows of a cheap 6x9, do tell!

The SQ-A's dont (or, at least, their's is much more convoluted), but this was rectified with the SQ-Ai as I understand it.. Requires battery power to keep the shutter open, however.

Thanks. I will look into that. I am still up in the air about all of this, but you guys are helping. I wouldn't mind a model that is fully manual, then again, I wouldn't mind the Rollei 6008.

I think Commercial Camera Repair has a Rollei as well. And the kickass Bronica GS-1 (6x7).

That is the one by Henrys, right? If so, he just recently raised his prices by quite a bit. I was going to pick up a Rollei there and then, swoosh, the prices jumped by hundreds!

I know everyone's biased towards the camera they use, but the lack of electronics on the (older) Hasselblads is definitely a good thing, imo.

It is. I was in there 3 weeks ago looking at the Bronicas and Mamiyas (no hasseys in stock), and his prices seemed reasonable at the time.

micro: I completely agree. If price wasn't an object, it would be Hasselblad for sure (and that's what I hope to get when I can afford it someday). If Bronica made a fully manual, battery-free camera with decent lens availability, I'd get it for sure. The S2A was that camera (which I used to own), but finding extra lenses (or anything extra) for it was difficult.
