The Lawnmower Man

My ex-husband has some friends of his who own a landscaping company cut my lawn. He told both myself and the landscapers that he would continue to pay for them to cut the grass.

Well, that didn't happen, and I was bitching to my friend about it. Her brother cuts lawns and she told him that maybe he should stop by my house and talk to me about it. He never did.

Later that afternoon, I pulled into my driveway to see him cutting my lawn. I thought that maybe my friend sent him over to help me out. But when he was done, he asked me for $50.00. I was caught off guard by this, because I wasn't sure how I felt about the whole thing. Kinda pissed and thankful at the same time. He told me he could come every Tuesday to cut my lawn. I told him that I WOULD LET HIM KNOW if I needed him to come back because my daughter's boyfriend offered to start doing it for free, just to help me out.

My daughter's boyfriend cut the grass on Sunday and on Tuesday I came home to find a bill in my mailbox from my friend's brother for cutting the grass! I asked my neighbor if he indeed came to cut the grass (I couldn't tell since my daughter's boyfriend did it two days before) and my neighbor said yes.

WTF?? I do not think I should pay this bill. I was taken aback the first time that he came out of the blue to do it without asking, but to come a second time? Especially since it was obvious that the grass didn't need to be cut.

But this is one of my best friend's brothers. She has been my friend for more than 20 years. He lives with her and she's a bit protective of him. I don't want to "upset" our friendship but this guy came and did unauthorized work and now wants to get paid for it.

If I were you, I wouldn't pay for it. You never even had the chance to discuss whether or not he would be cutting your lawn and he just did it without asking anyways! Don't pay the first bill or any bill after that!

I agree with the above, but be diplomatic about it. If the guy gets lippy, you be lippy. But explain your case first, maybe offer to pay half the charge as a way of everyone backing away from the situation and saving face. If it costs you $25, consider it a fee for the understanding that his services were not required and everyone can move on.

If he's an assbag about it, he gets nothing.

In your position, I would probably just pay it and with the payment send a very clear letter saying, "your services will no longer be needed. thank you."

Keep a copy and send the payment and letter registered mail so you know he got it. it better than small claims court.

Yah. I'd just pay it and make it very clear not to do it again.

I paid him for the first time he cut it. I'm not going to pay him for the second.

I'm starting to wonder if he was trying to scam me. He's a 50 year old guy, who lives in his sister's basement, and he cuts lawns and fixes small things for "little old ladies" for a living. Its my understanding that he can barely come up with the $30.00 a week his sister charges him to live there.

If my friend gets pissed, then shame on her.

Buy a lawnmower and do your own lawn. It will quickly pay for itself.

I agree. And I used to do it. Actually, I ENJOYED doing it.

Course now we have the following dilemma:

Large liver tumor + ordered by doc not to over-exert myself + huge yard with lots of hills = I can't cut my lawn anymore.

I do have a lawnmower and as I said, my daughters boyfriend is going to start cutting it.

I would also pay it but make it very clear about not coming again. And then if he does, say nothing and put a bunch of forks in your yard, randomly placed with about 3" sticking out of the ground before he comes the next time. Claim you don't know how they got there.
