I live in Quebec and here the cruelty agains't animal is checked by the SPCA and a non-profit organization.The SPCA don't get a penny from the gorvenement and ANIMA QUEBEC gets just about 100 000 $.The investigators have about the same right than a citizen.This is why I was very surprised and happy to see that for certains part of USA, for example in New York, the investigator of the ASPCA are integrated to the NYPD.In fact, they are legally Peace Officer, and most of the time they are former NYPD agent.They have large investigation rights, they can seize an animal without a warrant if the animal is believe to be in great danger.They can arrest somebody and they are armed with a fire weapon.I had a free preview of Animal Planet and there is a couple of show that are about Animal Police, like Animal Cops Houston or Animal Precint.If you love animal and you're disgusted by people that are cruel over them you will love those shows.Just to see that guy who let a Rottweiller female give birth outside during the winter causing the death of 11 babies ( because he just didn't care, it was a guard dog for is used car store parking lot ) get the handcuffs passed on is soooo nice.Take a look :

What those people do is amazing, I've seen those shows a few times but sometimes it's just too difficult for me to watch... and not run to the shelter and adopt 5 dogs and a dozen cats.

Sometimes I think that I would like to have their job. However, I doubt that I could handle it. I'm fairly certain that I would end up killing one of the abusers. I wouldn't do well in prison, so I guess that is not a job for me.

I was cursing Poppy's former owners today. We had her at the vet's and when he was checking her hind leg, she snapped at him. He says it could either be her being sensitive to her hind quarters being checked (normal dog behaviour) or it could be from a remembered injury. I mentioned that her leg was broken by the previous owners and he got a pissed off look on his face. Before this, Poppy was very friendly with the vet (even shook hands with him) and she was back to her original friendly self with the vet after the snapping incident. And he was able to finish the examination.

The current animal cruelty laws need better teeth and better enforcement.

'' As this stupid asshole will resist to his arrestation you can pepper spray him a little bit and hit him with your ASP baton a couple of times..A lot of serial killers, like Jeffrey Dahmer started their killing madness with animals.This is why it should be take much more seriously.

Exactly. Something like 95% of serial killers start out by torturing and killing animals.

Plus, animals are truly innocent. Animals, children, and the elderly. They should be revered, not harmed.

I love those animal cops shows! (except Miami because most of the officers are idiots.) It is sad to see animals in such awful conditions and I can understand how it would be difficult for some people to watch, but I love to see the cases with happy endings or where abusers are brought to justice. Being an APSCA officer would basically be my dream job, partly because in my area we only have animal control officers who would sooner shoot an injured animal than prosecute an abuser.

I just watched an episode of K-9 cops on animal planet

Seeing how a german shepherd can be awesome powerful police weapon, running after bad guys and bitting them, then playing with the k-9 officer kids in his backyard, like a big baby, just show how they are intelligent and great partner.

Wonder how the abusers would do in prison? Put them with the general population especially if 'Bubba' happens to love cats. Would be pretty interesting.

I completely agree... I want to get one for my baby.

My mother actually does the same thing as these people. She has the right to have them arrested and such. She recently did a case of cruelty with this guy whom beat his dog so bad he broke it's pelvis. He got away with it with claims of autism..then his dogs were seized shortly after his court appearance when his dog was found to have deep cuts around it's neck. It's sad what people do to there animals. There is a new trend in my area where people will go to shelters and adopt for fight dogs..and if they lose the fight and aren't dead..they will throw the dogs in the losing dogs in a trunk together and play music with the bass all the way up..the result is devastating. I have loads of respect for animal police..but I wish there was a more comprehensive check on people whom are purchasing animals..also I feel a license should be required for people to breed there dogs..otherwise make it mandatory to have them spayed/neutered.
