| | | When I park somewhere (i.e. my usual spot at Vandorf, or Vivian Sideroads north of Toronto), I always try to stay a good 80 to 100 feet back. If the train is going slow, I can pull forward, or walk forward. I was once sitting at Vandorf, chatting to a fellow foamer... Completely oblivious to the radio traffic. We saw one train blow past us... Going very fast. We then sat there, chatting (I think about star wars) for about an hour, and wondered what was going on. By this time when we turned on the radio, there was no traffic. It took a CN Crew change vehicle coming up to us, and asking us for directions, did we finaly figure out something was wrong... Sure enough, a mile up the line... that same train derailed, 28 cars off the rear of the train. We were sitting by the hot box detector, and apparently the hot box detector went off, causing the engineer to throw the train into full emergency stop and overreact a tad. The end of the train was on a curve at this point, and the whole tail end derailed. That was only 1 of 3 close calls I have had while rain fanning, in regards to derailments. So yes, I stay far back... You just never know!
