I have no problem with ethnic neighbourhoods, I get to pretend I am cultured when I visit them and their delightful stereotypes. I get that it's easier to move to a new place when you have people around you who speak your language and customs.

What I don't get are stupid clubs in university that revolve around ethnicity. What do they do? What do they talk about? How awesome the old country is? Why are the student unions funding this B.S. And no way in hell is it to diversify campus life since the only campus outreach these groups seem to do are pub nights or that one day a year they set up a booth with gr. 6 science fair posters that give facts about the culture. Sure it will help those new foreign kids except that the majority of students come from the exotic suburbs of Toronto.

This is not a rant because I am excluded from the clubs. Out of curiosity, I approached the Yugoslav club and asked what they do and they were just like "host parties lolol, and lyke Yugoslavian stuf." I guess I just don't understand interest based on ethnicity. People will say any group on campus based on any interest is bound to exclude people who don't have the same interest, and to this I say, AT LEAST THEY FUCKING DO MORE THAN HOST PUB NIGHTS. Also, I think it's way easier to join an outdoor sports club than "Albainians on Campus United."

Then there's these outside clubs and job boards for things like "asian professionals." What the fuck. This isn't a dating service.

In conclusion, I wish my university had better clubs.

i still have family in Ireland.

When I was in college we had a "Travel Club".

We would host trips to NYC and Montreal and it was indeed just a club for partying.

We needed to raise money for bus rentals so of course we would have a party. And all the school required was one "advisor" who needed to be a member of the school teaching staff.

Of course, we picked a "stoner" (every school has one) and he spent most of the trips sitting in his hotel room watching tv and getting high. We had no supervision what-so-ever.

And I must say, those trips were some of the best times I've had in my life.

So with that being said, YES. These ethnic clubs are probably just a reason to get together and party.

A friend of mine told me this story at his University where him and a few friends started a society for white engineers after another society for black engineers started. The administration of the University accused them of being racist and made them disband.

The young republicans at the University of Rhode Island did a similar thing where they offered a $200 scholarship for a white heterosexual student. The student senate threatened to disband their club and tried to force them to apologize.
