make sure the oil pan is not rotted. the 3800 is notorious for that.
also, the front timing covers have been known to leak.
also, check the subframe mounts (front) for any signs that the bolts are pulling through.
one last thing is the transmission... make sure it engages properly. Take it for a 15 mile run at least. That will show any problems with it.
other than that these cars are 200,000+mile cars if properly maintained.

nismo, my summer car is a 97 grand prix se the 3.8 when cared for will last forever. its a cast iron block. They idle rough, even new, because of the phantom cylinders in the firing pattern. check for rot on the body with the doors open just near the kick panels left and right, there is a pit that leaves tend to settle in. Also check the rear brake calipers, they are notorious for sticking. All in all they are pretty good and for long distance driving i get better mileage than in my 2.4 sunfire. Oh and nismo, racing guys in integras is part of the fun, the engine has a lot of weight so the power it puts out doesnt get wasted in spinning tires. Ive embarassed a few ricers with my boat. One final thing, as samurai said about the oil pan, you can get them cheap as rebuilds. Dont laugh but my biggest problem i had with mine was the auto dimming mirror exploded and leaked all this greasy shit all over the interior.

By the way, i have 300 000kms on mine. Starts first crack and i love it. At 250.00 go for it.

Just be careful, there is a roadsider in chateauguay selling GM cars ridiculously cheap on kijiji. I went to look at a grand am yesterday and well his story on how he got the car changed more often than liz taylor changes husbands. He wanted 800 for a 2000 grand am, looked great but it was strangely painted a hyundai color. i could go on,

well i wouldnt let the guy buy it even as a beater, signs that tipped me off:
1. brand new snow tires on it (probly recaps, covering you cant align the wheels)
2. scrap yard inventory number on the top of the engine
3. odd paint mentionned above
4. the car was an SE but the drivers door said GT
5. cruise control cylinder and cable on the engine but no cruise control

the car was as fishy as the fulton market
