Can be, but at least here in Cali, only 151 is legal.

That said, making your own can't be too difficult. An acquaintance of mine hand brewed his own Absinthe from home made ethanol.

is absinthe illegal in Cali?

Yeah, everclear at 190 proof is illegal depending on what state you live in, which is weird, but then again your drinking age is 21 too, lol. And I'm not one for the home brewed booze, not only does it usually taste like shit, get chunks after it settles, make your house smell like shit... So on and so forth. I'd much rather just go out and buy it.

And by the way, is absinthe made with real worm wood legal in the states yet? A friend of mine said it was, but when I checked only the really high alc/vol absinthe was legal.

Wormwood is in fact legal now.

It turns out that absinthe never really had to much wormwood to begin with. I'd have to find the article again, someone somewhere got their hands on a original bottle of the stuff and ran tests on it. The stuff of yore has just as much wormwood as today's absinthe, but the alcohol content was much higher.

Yeah, turns out that the only thing that was making it hallucinogenic was the cheaper brands of Absinthe back in the day would use heavy metals to get the right colour instead of aging it. And yeah, wormwood really didn't do much, but it still gives it a pretty good taste. I prefer the lower proof absinthes though, as it tastes very good on the rocks. If I want a high percent I'll stick with my 151. 75.5% is good enough for me... For now...

it all depends on how much wormwood is in the brand. The FDA is sampling every single brand before it's allowed to be sold.

I've yet to try burning the sugar, but I doubt that I'd do that on a ordinary routine.

When I had it, I didn't know the amount of water to put in, so I would keep pouring until the cube was gone... meaning I usually only had 1-1.5 water to 1 absinthe... REALLY strong... which that link says 3-4 roughly. No wonder it was pretty heavy... to the point that it was easier to shoot than sip!

still tastes damn good though...

Whenever I have it I am already rather gone, but I drink it straight on the rocks. This is only the 70-something%alc/vol though, I havn't done it with the 80% or higher.
I'd like to try the classy burning sugar cube and all that, but it seems to be a bit too much work, making a zombie is enough work for me.

actually the burning is rather new. The true french way is to let it drip onto a sugar cube until it's completely dissolved, then add water to taste.

Funny thing for me is that I can't stand the taste of anise anything. I don't even like absinthe. But I will say this much, drinking too much of the stuff, while smoking pot, will give you the spins in four directions.

Somewhere in Memphis there is a bedroom whose carpet will always smell like anise from a night of binging on Czech absinthe. Woke up in a puddle of my own bile after ten shots in an hour. Only years later can I even stomach anything with that licorice-anise flavor.

On a chemical note, although I have no problem believing that heavy metal poisoning could cause hallucination, the official word years ago was that Thujone was responsible for these effects. Nonetheless, I am inclined to believe that the hallucinogenic effects were derived from the combination of the green fairy with a fair amount of opium, either eaten or smoked, as the combination was often practiced in opium dens.

I can say for sure, I tried real absinthe before it was legal in any form in the U.S., and four shots, done the traditional way, over sugar on a slotted spoon, produced little more than the typical stupor associated with drunkenness. After being told later that one had to binge on it to get the hallucinogenic effects, I tried 10 shots and got only alcohol poisoning.

The moral of the story? If you like anise, you'll probably like absinthe, but only in the same quantities that you would normally consume high proof alcohol. Anything verging on binging is just self-destructive.

Also, Everclear is legal in California, just hard to find. My girl uses it to make Limoncello at home, and has bought a number of 190 proof bottles here in the bay area. Why anyone would want to drink it straight is beyond me. Aside from infusions of fruit and sugar, it's only use is spiking punches and mixing with schnapps for mean shots, if you ask me.

I've been to many, many liquor stores. I have yet to see a bottle of 190. 151 all the time, Ledgers has it, Cask has it. As I said, it's illegal in cali.

I guess it was the 151 version. No wonder the last batch of Limoncello tasted so extra sweet. She said she bought it at Bevmo in Jack London Square, but I see they only have the 151. Next time we will drive elsewhere. Maybe Nevada?

had some of this last night:

I got stomach sickness before I finished my second, and before I even got any feeling off the damn stuff. Not a good product, at least to me and anyone who tried it. Lucid was much better.
